Nurse Manager
Basic Function:
The Nurse Manager (NM) actualizes the vision, mission and values for Ellis Medicine and maintains standards of the practice for nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association, Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and Nursing’s social Policy Statement. The Nurse Manager participates in performance improvement/research activities; maintains professional practice standards and clinical expertise; and demonstrates leadership skills. The Nurse Manager demonstrates core and unit specific competencies based on the patient population served. This position is accountable for maintaining all clinical administrative functions (patient care delivery, fiscal, material and human resources) of nursing unit(s) on a 24-hour basis. The position is responsible to create an environment in which autonomy is nurtured, encouraged and reflected in a highly competent workforce capable of providing quality care. Professional interdisciplinary collaboration, communication and teamwork enacted enable care delivery to the customers and community to improve health and wellness. The position is responsible to uphold compliance with Ellis Medicine’s policies/procedures, service excellence standards and regulatory requirements.
 
Requirements:
Currently licensed in New York State as a Registered Nurse and a graduate of an approved school of nursing. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required, MSN preferred or in progress. Three (3)- five (5) years' acute care experience preferred. Excellent interpersonal relationships, effective communication skills, (written, oral and interpersonal) ability to problem solve, ability to motivate, develop and coach individuals and groups, ability to appropriately confront issues, and ability to think creatively. A strong commitment to furthering institutional performance measures through interdisciplinary teamwork is essential.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.  Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance.  Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

Responsibilities:

  • The Nurse Manager will work collaboratively with the DON to plan, implement, and monitor the nursing care delivery system to assure effective and efficient utilization of staff and other resources for the delivery of patient care.
  • Creates/validates daily assignments that reflect appropriate assignments for all staff and their responsibility for patient care based on skill levels and patient care needs.
  • Assures that an adequate number of nursing personnel are scheduled and available to meet patient care needs which include proactively analyzing resources and personnel needs.
  • Discuss with staff the effectiveness of systems in place with focus on continuous improvement and the continuum of care.
  • Facilitates and promotes the delivery of patient/family centered care to a diverse customer population by upholding the standards of excellent patient care always.
  • Manages unscheduled absences and tardiness according to policy.
  • Collaborates with Human Resource business partner regarding staff discipline according to policy.
  • Assesses and reassigns staff members in to effectively and efficiently meet the needs of the unit and organization.
  • Collaborates with the DON to create an environment for staff participation in performance improvement activities that assures the care of the particular patient population meets or exceeds institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Maintains current knowledge of nationally recognized standards of care and evidence based nursing practice for populations served.
  • Works in collaborative manner with unit core group and interdisciplinary team to track and trend key process and outcome data. Assumes leadership role in addressing issues identified.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in the provision of nursing care for individual patients and populations as defined in unit scope of service. Functions as resource to clinical staff in providing safe and quality patient care.
  • Educates staff on current and new policies and procedures.
  • Approves assigned personnel’s bi-weekly payroll and submits productivity stats each payroll period.
  • Responsible for overall quality of patient care, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulatory standards.
  • Identifies, responds, and investigates potential and actual risk management issues and prevents re-occurrence by establishing and implementing an action plan.
  • Provides ongoing communication, coordination, and collaboration with all members of the Health Care Team and develops effective professional working relationships with other organizational leaders.
  • Promotes an environment that enhances safety, communication and satisfaction for patients and staff.
  • Guides staff in Service Recovery assessment, education and implementation.
  • Identifies ways to enhance the patient experience and educates staff on basic interactions with patients and families.
  • Serves as a resource and interprets Hospital polices and procedures as well as NYSNA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Participates in hiring, discipline, and termination practices to achieve and maintain optimal nursing care delivery on the unit.
  • Conducts performance appraisals timely and they reflect the provision of a framework for ongoing development of an employee.
  • Efficiently manages the financial and capital resources of the organization to support the fiscal viability.
  • Participates in organizational committees.
  • Demonstrates professional growth and accountability for own practice and facilitates the professional growth and development of assigned staff.
  • Maintains continuous education annually.
  • Escalates problems/challenges to designated DON and or Vice President of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer as appropriate.
  • Performs all other duties as required within the scope of practice.

Salary Range:   $41.30-$61.94/hour                  Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
