Contract Type Classified Hourly If other, please specify Recruitment Type Open Position Details General Statement MSU Student Health Services (SHS) is an outpatient clinic that serves the diverse needs of the MSU student body (17,000+ students). SHS provides primary care, acute care, dental, and pharmacy services. SHS is primarily funded by a student fee model, aimed at reducing barriers to health care access and providing timely and relevant care for MSU students. SHS is part of the Student Wellness area, within the Division of Student Success. This position will report to the Chief Medical Officer, Student Health Services. SHS is housed in the new Student Wellness Center, a 165,000 square foot facility which opened in the fall of 2024. The new facility is home to Student Health Services, Counseling & Psychological Services, Health Advancement and Campus Recreation. The facility enhances the integrated and holistic model of student health and wellness at MSU. Duties and Responsibilities Staff Supervision: With the Chief Medical Officer, defines and manages the scope of practice for nurses and Medical Assistants, including professional development training and ongoing competencies. Oversees and coordinates nurse triage strategy at SHS. Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates nursing and medical assistant staff in accordance with State and Federal Laws, and University personnel policies. Monitors, evaluates, and directs corrective and disciplinary actions. Identifies and recommends staff continuing education needs and facilitates staff meetings. Serves as a resource for nursing and MA staff. Fosters and maintains an atmosphere of collegiality and excellent patient care.
Administration: Manages the daily operations of nurses and medical assistants while maintaining patient care objectives, clinical protocols, policies, and procedures. Manages the scheduling of nursing and medical assistant staff according to patient acuity and to assure optimal nursing and medical assistant services across sub-units. Collaborates with Student Health Services Director and Chief Medical Officer to review and adjust staffing to meet fluctuating patient care and budgetary constraints. Collaborates with other SHS supervisors to build effective care delivery teams. Develops standardized procedures and monitors compliance. Collaborates with Chief Medical Officer on quality and performance improvement activities. Assesses patient care environment and delegates tasks as necessary to ensure safety. Initiates resolutions and corrective action; prioritizes ongoing evaluation and assessment of RN/MA professional development. Participates in team meetings. Serves on SHS Leadership Team, campus and SHS committees, as appropriate and performs other duties to support clinical work flow as needed.
Patient Care: Performs RN duties at the top of a nurse’s clinical scope, utilizing SHS policies and protocols. Provides patient education to empower self-care and health maintenance. Maintains patient records and reports according to standards required by the State, University and SHS. Communicates with patients via phone and secure patient portal messaging, as appropriate. Participates in Peer Review process. Fosters a strong commitment to continually supporting, promoting and building a whole community, fostering appreciation for people of many backgrounds and the provision of culturally competent and equitable patient care and workplace practices. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Bachelor’s degree in nursing or public health from an accredited university. Minimum of 5 years of experience working in nursing, health care, or closely related area . Experience in a supervisory or leadership position. Must have current and valid Montana RN License (required), or currently in the process of obtaining. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Experience in a college/university health care setting. An understanding of and appreciation for the intersection between clinical health services, behavioral health, prevention, and student engagement in an integrated model of patient care. The Successful Candidate Will Knowledge of supervising a medical care unit. Knowledge of patient needs and care assessment. Broad clinical skills in providing and supervising the appropriate medical care to patients. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, staff members, and other members of the MSU community. Knowledge and experience in best practices of leadership and supervision. Ability to work independently to utilize skills for problem prevention in patient care process, conflict resolution, change facilitation and problem solving. Ability to utilize a growth mindset in a collaborative manner. Proficiency using electronic medical record systems. Demonstrated skill in gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing complex data for application in planning, assessment, and identifying patterns and formulating logical and objective conclusions. Ability to work independently and follow through on projects with minimal direction. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
