Nurse Manager - Operating Room IDMH
Job Description MAIN FUNCTION: Coordinates activities between defined areas and provides clinical and administrative leadership and expertise. Facilitates an atmosphere of interactive management and the development of collegial relationships among nursing personnel and others. Has major responsibility for the implementation of the vision, mission, plans, and standards of the organization and nursing services within their defined areas of responsibility. Reports to either Service Line Director, Chief Nursing Officer, Associate Chief Nursing Officer, or Residential Health Care Administrator. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Standards of Care Standard I. Assessment Gather information on unit operations, including staffing levels, patient acuity, and resource availability. Evaluate Team Skills and patient care needs to guide effective decision-making. Standard II. Diagnosis Identify areas for improvement in patient care, team dynamics, and workflow efficiency. Recognize barriers to optimal performance, such as gaps in skills, morale, or resources. Standard III. Planning Develop action plans to address identified issues. Set goals for patient outcomes, staff development, and unit performance. Plan schedules, budget allocations, and resources to support unit needs. Standard IV. Implementation Execute plans by coordinating with staff, assigning tasks, and ensuring that policies, procedures, and regulations are followed. Mentor and coach team members to improve care quality and unit functionality. Standard V. Evaluation Review outcomes of implemented plans, including patient satisfaction, staff performance, and unit efficiency. Adjust strategies based on feedback, and continuously strive for improvement in patient care, operations, and culture. Standards of Professional Performance Standard I. Quality of Care and Administrative Practice The Nurse Manager systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and nursing services administration for his/her scope of responsibility. + Identifies key quality indicators for monitoring and evaluation including outcome of nursing care. + Sets goals for self and unit and works to achieve them. + Completes reports in a timely manner. + Problem solves and assists staff in developing appropriate problem-solving skills. Standard II. Performance Appraisal The Nurse Manager evaluates his/her own performance based on professional practice standards, relevant statutes and regulations, and organizational criteria. + Engages in self-performance appraisal on a regular basis identifying areas of strength as well as areas for professional/practice development. + Completes employee evaluations within the month of review date. Standard III. Education The Nurse Manager acquires and maintains current knowledge in administrative and clinical practice. + Seeks additional knowledge and skills appropriate for the practice setting. + Seeks experience to expand and maintain skill and knowledge base. Standard IV. Collegiality The Nurse Manager fosters a professional environment. + Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others, and acts as a role model/mentor. Is seen as a leader by staff. + Contributes to an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and effective communication. Standard V. Ethics The Nurse Manager’s decisions and actions are based on ethical principles. + Supports the system to address ethical issues within nursing and the organization. + Maintains privacy, confidentiality, and security of patients, clients, staff, and organizational data. Standard VI. Collaboration The Nurse Manager collaborates with nursing staff on all levels, interdisciplinary teams, executive officers, and other stakeholders. + Facilitates collaboration within organized nursing service and the organization. + Recognizes importance of positive relationship between Unit Director and staff. Standard VII. Research The Nurse Manager supports research and integrates it into the delivery of nursing care and nursing administration. + Fosters the identification of areas suitable for nursing research. + Promotes research-based practice. Standard VIII. Resource Utilization The Nurse Manager evaluates and administers the resources of organized nursing services. + Assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling of personnel. + Assignments reflect appropriate utilization of personnel. + Participates in planning and monitoring the budget for defined area(s). Participation in Decision making Participates in Unit, Division of Nursing, and Arnot Health Councils/Committees, as appropriate. Makes decision based on unit feedback and need. Quality Improvement Fosters quality improvement in nursing practice at Unit Manager level in collaboration with other departments. EDUCATION: Required: Current New York State nursing licensure. Bachelor of Science in Nursing or acquired in 2-3 years/\. Preferred: Certification in nursing specialty preferred. EXPERIENCE: Required: Proven experience and expertise in clinical area relevant to patient population (minimum 5 years clinical experience). Excellent communication and writing ability. Preferred: Education/experience in the principle of administration and supervision. CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS: Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date. Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required in critical care units. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Appreciable physical effort required. Moving, lifting, and assisting patients whose size and physical ability can vary greatly. Some lifting, reaching, and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time. EXPOSURE CATEGORY: Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood and body fluid or tissue. Requirements
