Position Summary:

The Outpatient Nurse Practitioner (NP) for NeuroSciences will serve as a clinical NP to help ensure patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency of the NeuroSciences Department. The NP will work closely and collaboratively with physicians, clinical leaders, referring physicians, nursing leadership, the nursing team, inpatient clinical services, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team, while serving as the patient navigator. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and technical competencies of a NP covering NeuroSciences including but not limited to coordination of perioperative care and services for the patient and family. In collaboration with physicians and office staff, the NP will maintain oversight of patient scheduling and flow formulation. Assess, manage and treat patients within the scope of practice based on NCCN guidelines to provide ongoing care, and identify new problems. Support the collection of Performance Improvement data and work with clinical and administrative staff to improve quality indicators and outcomes Writes orders for surgery, medications, laboratory work, and diagnostic tests. Interprets laboratory and diagnostic test results. Escalates abnormal medical findings appropriately. Able to evaluate medical/surgical problems of surgical patients and appropriately requests consults to other specialties when indicated. Provides education to patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and the use of prescribed medical-surgical treatments and/or medications pertinent to the patient's condition. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with all regulatory standards and evidenced-based standards of care. Maintains documentation compliance for appropriate coding and billing. Remain current with NP and related CME Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements:

· Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.

· Current New York license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.

· Current New York Nurse Practitioner  License and registration as a Nurse Practitioner

· National Certification in Nurse Practitioner specialty (ie: ANCC, AACP or NAPNAP)

· Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement.

· BCLS and ACLS certifications required

· Minimum two years’ experience.

May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) database and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS database can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc. Position requires the ability to move about freely at least 85 percent of the time. Must be able to remain stationary for extended/prolonged periods Frequently moves/transports objects up to fifty (50) pounds and must be able to move patients of all weights with a minimum of one (1) assist or assistive device/equipment Must be able to work in an environment with continuous interruptions Must be able to assess and respond to rapidly changing situational needs of patients, departments and hospital Must be able to adapt to a high-stress and fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions Must be able to constantly operate computers, equipment, and other devices Individual must be able to understand and relate to theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given during the course of a day
