Job Summary:

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) is an equal member of the intensive care team. The primary responsibility is management of critically ill adult patients in a multidisciplinary, teaching intensive care unit. The APP is under the direct supervision of a critical care board-certified, full-time Intensivist. The APP also practices shoulder to shoulder with Critical Care fellows and physician residents from various specialties and when appropriate would be expected to supervise same. This position is for rotating shifts, the ICU is covered 24/7 by APP team.

Essential Functions:

Obtains and records patient historyAdequately manages patient flow in the ICUCompletes diagnostic and therapeutic studiesCompletes charting in a thorough and timely mannerPerforms physical and medical screening examinationsWorks within legal, regulatory, and ethical practice standardsActively participates in department staff meetings and risk management educationOrders diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies or other therapies as appropriateEstablishes diagnostic decision-making and initiates a treatment plan, which may include ordering medications, additional therapeutic modalities, etc.Coordinates patient care with other members of the health care team. Initiates consultation requests to other health professionals to provide more comprehensive patient managementInstructs and counsels patients regarding mental and physical health, referring patients to appropriate specialists/resourcesPerforms procedures as allowed by state law and under the direction of the supervising or collaborating physicianCompletes required courses, i.e. HIPAA, EMTALA and other CME/CEU requirementsOther duties as assigned, including but not limited to academic lectures and / or quality improvement projects

Job Requirements:

Physician Assistant CertificationRegistration & Licensure by the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners/ Physician Assistant Advisory required ORMaster s degree in NursingNP CertificationRegistered Professional Nurse with current NJ state license; CDS and DEAPrior work experience as a professional nurseBasic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Certifications, PALS (if required)Active membership in a professional organization preferredAbility and willingness accommodate scheduling needs including working extended hours, weekdays, overnights, weekends, and holidays

Knowledge and Skills:

Excellent time management skillsRecommended adult critical care experienceMedical and broad-based clinical emergency medicine knowledgeExperience with procedures and point of care ultrasound is desiredAbility to effectively and successfully work with all ICU and hospital employeesExcellent communication and interpersonal skills. Organizational ability, management, leadership and teaching skills
