The OHSU Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is part of the Department of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and encompasses the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and Digestive Health Center. The OHSU Digestive Health Center unites subspecialty providers in all areas of gastroenterology, including inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatic disease, motility disorders, and interventional endoscopy. Practicing medicine alongside complementary subspecialists across the university assures that each patient has access to state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatments. Our faculty strive to provide quality, compassionate and evidence-based, patient-centered care. We are engaged in service, research and education throughout the institution. We are closely affiliated with the OHSU Gastroenterology Fellowship, and our faculty actively participate in research at the Knight Cancer Center and Brenden-Colson Center for Pancreatic Care.

Function/Duties of Position

The Hepatology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a faculty member credentialed and privileged as a Physician Assistant (PA) or a Nurse Practitioner (NP). The APP is a member of the OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws.


The APP will provide outpatient medical management to hepatology patients. The APP will be trained to evaluate patients independently including counseling on diagnoses, education on procedural expectations, risks, benefits and possible adverse events. The APP will also be trained to review incoming hepatology clinic referrals and triage them appropriately to a procedure or clinic evaluation. The APP will provide support to the hepatology team in terms of pathology follow up, patient calls, and electronic medical record coverage. The APP will function and be supported in a team-based approach to Hepatology in an expanding practice.


The APP will be partnered with and support two MD Hepatology providers. All patients will be co-managed by the APP and MD partner.


The APP will be assigned to eight four-hour clinical sessions each week based on the needs of the section. These eight sessions will be a combination of face-to-face clinics alongside an MD partner, independent follow up clinics (virtual and/or in-person) and asynchronous sessions (e-consults, referral management, billable mychart encounters, etc).


One full day each week will be protected for administrative work, education, or scholarship.


Candidates with prior GI experience, an eagerness to learn, attention to detail and excellent communication skills are encouraged to apply. Those without prior GI experience but who are enthusiastic and diligent learners will be provided thorough training on hepatology diagnoses, pathology, and management.

Required Qualifications

Physician Assistant:

Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant training program.Current registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed Physician Assistant.

Nurse Practitioner:

ANCC Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the specific are of specialization.Completion of a master’s degree in nursing.Current registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed Nurse Practitioner.
