About this unit:  

The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is a 22-bed ICU located in the Meijer Heart Center specializing in highly acute post-cardiac and advanced heart failure patients. The Unit makes a great investment in the orientation and training for their team members in order for them to learn complex procedures through not only daytime classroom training, but also several weeks of hands on training for in the moment needs. The initial orientation and training weeks will require daytime availability on weekdays for several weeks, before phasing into regular night shift schedule. Experts in caring for the most critically ill patients in our area and throughout Michigan. We are at the forefront of cardiac medicine, engaging in cutting-edge innovation and research.

Scope of Work:

CTICU Nurse techs care for a wide range of critical care patients including heart/lung transplant patients, post-operative open-heart patients, patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), CentriMag, Impella, and long-term ventricular assist devices (VAD).  Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, ECMO Cannulation, and other complex procedures with central lines, acting as a safety attendant for patients.   

Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN or Provider, consistent with clinical policies and procedures, and department standard work. Provides input in the development of an individualized plan of care. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner. 

Articulates the nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner. 

Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel. 

Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data. 

In addition, a Nurse Technician is often floated to other departments of higher need based with similar training.

 

Orientation

Important to note: Orientation weeks will require flexibility to train during weekdays for multiple weeks, before phasing into regular night shifts.

Next available start date based on orientation availability is the week of October 20th. Class Dates:  10/21 , 10/22, 10/24, 11/4 and ACC 11/15.

Week 1: Requires classroom orientation 8am-4:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.Week 2: Orientation shifts will be in the Nursing Unit 7am-7:30pmWeek 3: Monday November 4th Advanced Safety Care Class is required 8am-4:30pm and additional orientation shifts 7am-7:30pm this week also.Week 4: Will include 7am-7:30pm shifts and Adult Critical Care Class is required Friday November 15th.Weeks 5-12 will be continued orientation shifts 7am-7:30pm and will eventually phase into regular night shifts.

Required Qualifications 

High School Diploma or equivalent  Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) Required Within 90 Days Over 1 year of prior experience in inpatient care strongly preferred
