Nursing Assistant – 6 South CT Surgery

UPMC Hamot, a Magnet-designated hospital, is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Part-Time Nursing Assistant to join our 6 South unit. This dynamic, fast-paced unit provides specialized care to adult patients recovering from a variety of surgical procedures, including cardiothoracic, vascular, and weight loss surgeries, as well as those requiring telemetry or oxygen monitoring. About 6 South: 6 South is a 43-bed Medical/Surgical unit with 11 beds dedicated to Step-Down care for higher acuity patients. This blended unit provides post-operative care for adult patients recovering from cardiothoracic, vascular, and gastric bypass/weight loss surgeries. The unit also serves patients requiring telemetry or oxygen monitoring. In addition, the Step-Down unit cares for patients post-kidney transplant, hepatobiliary surgeries, and others requiring closer monitoring as they transition from ICU to the regular nursing unit. The unit is equipped to deliver advanced care, including CPAP, BIPAP, Optiflow oxygen therapy, glycemic control, and vasoactive medications.

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Responsibilities:

Provide direct patient care as directed by the RN, including assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, and transporting patients. Maintain a safe and clean environment conducive to patient safety and recovery, including safety checks, cleaning, changing bed linens, and keeping equipment and supplies organized. Assist in acquiring and distributing supplies and equipment for patient care, including messenger functions and stocking patient rooms and unit areas. Perform UPMC nursing core responsibilities: blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry monitoring, and more. Report any changes in patient status to the RN and assist with patient care adjustments. Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per protocol. Provide diversional activities to reduce or prevent the use of restraints. Assist with patient documentation according to established procedures. Participate in unit activities and assist colleagues when needed, including responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Constructively receive feedback, communicate learning needs to the unit director, and take action to improve knowledge and skills. Demonstrate professional behavior and effective communication with all members of the healthcare team, patients, and families. Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen protocols. Contribute to the efficiency of the unit by suggesting and supporting changes to improve patient care. Provide companionship or one-on-one supervision for patients as required. Complete clerical functions as needed by the department. Perform other duties as assigned by the unit director or supervisor.
