**Description:**
**Position Overview:**
The Nursing Unit Supervisor is responsible for providing direct patient care and overseeing nursing activities to ensure safe, high-quality care within the unit/department. This role includes leadership responsibilities, such as mentoring and supervising staff, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team, and ensuring smooth operations on assigned shifts (e.g., days, nights, or weekends). The Nursing Unit Supervisor will work closely with the unit/department director to enhance care quality and may be tasked with other management duties.
**Clinical Functions:**
+ Maintain clinical competence to assess patient needs, plan care, implement interventions, and evaluate outcomes.
+ Work independently in accordance with the Iowa Nurse Practice Act and Mercy Medical Center policies.
+ Serve as a resource, mentor, and role model for staff in delivering patient care.
+ Provide clinical expertise and consultation to other nursing staff and health professionals.
+ Lead daily huddles and assist with maintaining huddle boards.
+ Monitor safety compliance and contribute to fostering a culture of safety.
**Supervisory Functions:**
+ Supervise unit/department personnel (including RNs, patient care technicians, and department support assistants) on assigned shifts.
+ Facilitate efficient unit operations, including staff assignments, patient placement, and throughput.
+ Adjust staffing levels and prioritize workloads based on patient/unit needs.
+ Support staff in ensuring positive patient experiences and assist in resolving patient/family complaints.
+ Assist with quality improvement activities and evidence-based practices.
+ Participate in management duties such as interviewing, hiring, scheduling, timekeeping, performance feedback, discipline, and record maintenance.
+ Represent the unit/department director in hospital committees or management meetings as needed.
**Care Coordination:**
+ Plan unit and nursing resource utilization to optimize patient care and department operations.
+ Collaborate with the Patient Flow department and House Supervisor to ensure efficient patient throughput.
+ Assist with patient/family education and discharge planning.
+ Facilitate communication between patients, families, physicians, and other caregivers.
**Education:**
+ Collaborate with the Unit Director and Clinical Resource Nurse to ensure staff competency and skills development.
+ Provide orientation and education to staff, students, and community organizations as needed.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
+ Current Iowa or compact state RN license.
+ Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
+ At least 18 months of RN experience required; Emergency Department experience preferred.
+ Completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training within 3 months of hire.
+ ACLS certification (or obtain within 6 months of hire).
+ BLS certification (or obtain within 3 months of hire).
+ Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
