Nutrition Services Aide - Server

SUMMARY

The Nutrition Services Aide – Server, serves food in the Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living or Independent Living dining rooms. This position has contact with staff, residents and volunteers in the kitchen area and Dining Room.

  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide excellent customer service to residents during meal times, greeting residents with a smile. presenting foods of the day and offer alternatives, taking orders and serving food.  *Assisted Living and Independent living dining rooms, clearing tables, taking dishes to dishwashing station and clean dishes. *Perform routine tasks involved in food service in the kitchen and dining room areas. *Follow simple instructions and established procedures such as: dishing up the meal, Cleaning and washing dishes at the end of service.Identify and respond appropriately to emergency situations, such as grease spills, injuries, fires and storm-related evacuations. *Consistently follow standard principles of sanitation and universal precautions to preserve food quality and prevent the transmission of food-borne illness. *Support various other Culinary Service responsibilities as needed.

 

Skilled Nursing Facility Specific Duties

Plate food in accordance with all pertinent safety and health regulations, guidelines and standards.  Follow resident meal tickets, menus and/or recipes correctly, making any necessary or requested substitutions. Regularly elicit residents’ directions in food choices, menus, recipes and presentation. Help to prepare and serve appropriate meals.Maintain food, kitchen equipment and cooking area to ensure safety and sanitation requirements are met. Keep a clean, tidy and organized kitchen in compliance with all regulations; clean when necessary.Clean dining room tables after the tables have been cleared by nursing.Report repair and maintenance needs as appropriate.Take temperatures of foods and equipment and maintain proper documentation for regulatory compliance.

Assisted Living and Independent Living Specific Duties

Set up Dining Room by cleaning tables and chairs, setting silverware, glasses, cups, saucers and napkins. Set up centerpieces and menus and as needed spot clean floors. *Prepare and plate all salads and starters for the Dining Room and desserts of the day. *Get salads from Prep Cook and desserts from Chef/Baker. *Assist the Chef in ensuring all accompaniments for the next meal are available and ready for serving staff (e.g., tarter sauce, lemon wedges, ketchup cups, etc.). *Set up Dining Room for the next meal service.  As needed pre-set soup stations.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education, Experience and Credentials

High school graduate or equivalent preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Able to perform simple cleaning and food service tasks.Able to observe standard food handling hygiene and sanitation standards to meet HACCP regulations.Knowledge of kosher dietary laws. Understand the separation of meat, dairy, and parve kitchen utensils, pots and pans, etc.Self-motivated, fast learner, shows initiative, willing to seek out resident and staff needs and meet them. Able to display high levels of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the inquiries and needs of individuals both internal and external to the organization in accordance with our PROUD standards.Able to apply time management and self-management skills. Able to be flexible and productive in an environment with regular interruptions. Able to demonstrate good teamwork, and work cooperatively and collaboratively with others.Possess knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemicals used to perform functions of the job. Keep chemical and cleaning supplies safely stored.Able to read, understand, and follow facility and department safety and emergency procedures.Able to follow and adhere to Universal Precautions and Infection Control procedures. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB

Incumbent must be able to:

Able to stand for long periods as well as walk, bend, twist, pivot and stoop. Regularly lift objects up to 20 pounds, occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.Effectively communicate in English, including following oral and written instructions, in order to communicate with people inside and outside the organization.Able to effectively use office equipment to review and create information.Work at a desk for extended periods of time and perform long hours of work at a computer. Frequently stand and walk to move around office/building repeatedly throughout the day.Able to work a flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends and overtime; including attending events/meetings as needed.Able to obtain reliable transportation

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Incumbent must be able to use trays, knives, serving utensils, glasses, silverware, dishes, dishwashing machine, serve ware and related kitchen utensils. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is primarily indoors, but physically demanding due to the kitchen and serving environment with its steam, heat, cold, humidity, odors, spills, wet floors, and noise. There is also exposure to chemicals used in cleaning. Some exposure to outdoors while serving food during barbecues and other outdoor events.
