The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Centerof the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a compassionate, talented Occupational Therapist - I to become a part of a dynamic team.

The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center is a 60-bed inpatient psychiatric facility that also provides comprehensive and timely forensic evaluations for individuals to determine pre-trial competency and/ or criminal responsibility. We also provide quality, integrated care to support an individual’s recovery process through ongoing psychiatric treatment and care.

Applicants to this entry-level, Occupational Therapist-I position have the chanceto provide quality occupational therapy assessment and interventions as part of a multidisciplinary team represented by psychiatry, nursing, social work, and other clinical disciplines. The selected candidate will provide skilled occupational therapy interventions within group and individual settings using evidence-based approaches that address the individualized treatment goals of each person served. Duties also include active engagement in the initiative to minimize seclusion and restraint through sensory integration techniques and other therapeutic approaches as indicated. Teamwork and collaboration are essential and exercised on a daily basis when coordinating interventions and activities with professional colleagues within the department including recreational therapists, rehabilitation counselors and occupational therapy assistants. The selected candidate will receive regular support and supervision and will also be supported with identifying and engaging in continuing education to support enhancement of clinical skills. Level-I and Level-II Fieldwork student supervision is highly encouraged and offered regularly.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week, weekday shift 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekend shift 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Days off are Friday and Saturday.

Duties and Responsibilities: (These duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):

Utilizes current occupational therapy evaluations as well as DSCFMHC OT Functional Assessment to identify person’s current level of functioning and person’s goal towards recovery.Utilizes a person-centered and strength-based approach that supports engagement in therapeutic activities and promotes reinforcement of occupational roles.Develops and implements interventions in group and 1:1 setting to develop and/ or improve client factors identified at evaluation.Provides ongoing input into initial and subsequent Treatment Plans and updates rehab goals and interventions.Counsels’ patients, and family when clinically indicated, regarding progress, goals and plans as requested.Counsels’ patients, and family when clinically indicated, regarding resources within the community and facilitates community integration.Seeks continuing education and in-service opportunities to maintain competency.Participates in ongoing staff and patient orientation to OT Services as indicated.Maintains records of patient attendance, equipment/ interventions used, response to treatment, and adaptations to treatment in relation to treatment goals. Coordinates with rehabilitation/ occupational therapy team and other group leaders to ensure that groups are held on time, in place, and that proper materials are provided/ available.Participates in planning special activities such as holiday events, and community outings that support recovery and quality of life for patients. Demonstrates comprehension of and practices the overriding principles of Trauma Informed Care Model. Promotes teamwork by demonstrating flexibility, the ability to listen to the views of others, to compromise, to handle conflict and stay focused on a positive outcome, demonstrates good communication and collaboration skills.Complies with all safety policies and procedures and ensures implementation of relevant Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.Assists in requesting equipment and supplies; may help maintain inventory and/or records of purchases; maintains treatment area, equipment and supplies as requested.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of the treatment methods, techniques and procedures used in occupational therapy.Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in providing occupational therapy. Knowledge of the techniques and methods of diagnostic and prognostic testing relative to occupational therapy. Ability to understand, explain and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of occupational therapy data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Ability to gather information through observing individuals.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to administer specialty occupational therapy assessments, synthesize report of the findings and provide recommendations based off of the results as indicated.Knowledge of group dynamics and group facilitation when providing activity-based and psycho-educational groups with adults exhibiting signs and symptoms of mental illness. Ability to provide group and individual interventions while maintaining a harmonious and supportive environment.Knowledge of and ability to write SMART goals and to develop rehab interventions to address goal.Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a current and valid Occupational Therapist License issued by the Board of Allied Health Professions.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required.

Working Conditions:

Occupational Therapists may work inpsychiatric treatmentsettings with individualsliving withemotional distress, mental health conditions and/ or intellectual disabilities as well as with people within the correctional system.

Occupational Therapists may also work out-of-doors exposed to changing weather conditions.

Occupational Therapists may need to travel for work related purposes.
