Position Information **Position/Rank** Oncology Chief **Department** 00233 - Oncology **City** Salt Lake City, UT **Track** Track Dependent on Qualifications **New Position to Begin** upon hire **Details** The Division of Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine ( DOIM ) in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine and the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah seeks an exceptional oncology leader to serve as the Chief for the Oncology Division. This is a remarkable opportunity for a dynamic academic leader to further the growth and innovation of this vibrant program’s clinical, research, educational, and other programmatic missions. The Oncology Chief will work closely with the DOIM Chair and Huntsman Cancer Institute leaders to promote a collaborative environment that enhances clinical growth and academic development as well as advance research consistent with Department, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Institutional missions. The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who promotes institutional stewardship throughout University of Utah Health and the University of Utah. Competitive candidates will have a track record of accomplishment as an academic oncologist, as evidenced by practice and excellence in clinical oncology, original contributions to oncology research, national and international visibility, a history of extramural research funding, and progressive leadership and administrative experience. Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah is an NCI -Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network ( NCCN ), supporting and fostering a vibrant cancer research enterprise in a highly collegial environment. Huntsman Cancer Institute has an outstanding history of academic achievement and impact, with $73 million extramural grant funding in FY24, an “exceptional” rating at the last two NCI reviews, a highly collaborative environment, a positive and supportive culture, and a strong commitment to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, training, community engagement, and service. Huntsman Cancer Institute offers state-of-the-art laboratories, including a 225,000 sq. ft. research building which opened in the summer of 2017 and doubled the Institute’s research space. The Division of Oncology is one of twelve divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine. The faculty and advanced practice clinicians cover the entire spectrum of oncology and are dedicated to high-quality, value-driven patient care, education, and innovation and discovery through basic, clinical, population, and health-services research. The Division of Oncology is integrated in the Huntsman Cancer Institute, serving the five-state Mountain West region and beyond. The DOIM and Huntsman Cancer Institute are undergoing major expansions of their clinical operations in the Northern Utah area and are also committed to growth in research of the Oncology Division through recruitment of new clinical, translational, and laboratory-based research faculty. Clinical activities in the Division of Oncology are currently supported by 30 physicians and 27 advanced practice clinicians who provide outpatient and inpatient care services at four locations in the Salt Lake Valley including Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah Health’s community clinics in South Jordan, Sugarhouse, and Farmington. Clinical activities include subspecialty programs such as the Huntsman Acute Care Clinic, Supportive Oncology & Survivorship ( SOS ), Family Cancer Assessment Clinic ( FCAC ), and Geriatric Clinic, among others. Outside of the valley, the Division provides outreach services at the affiliate hospitals of Madison Memorial in Rexburg, Idaho, and St. John’s Health in Jackson, Wyoming. The Division of Oncology has one of the most robust clinical trial programs in the DOIM and at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Research activities in the Division are supported by $20 million of extramural funding in FY24, through federal, association/foundation, and industry awards. In FY24, the Division of Oncology accounted for 45% of all industry trials, 48% of all investigator-initiated trials (IITs), and 46% of NCI and Cooperative Group Trials at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Clinical research is supported by the Huntsman Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Office, Biospecimen and Molecular Pathology Shared Resource, numerous other shared resources across Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah, and disease-specific clinical databases. The Utah Population Database affords unique opportunities for oncology researchers interested in population-based genetic research, an area of great research strength at the University of Utah. The Oncology Division is highly committed to the education of fellows, DOIM house staff, PhD postdoctoral fellows, and students. Attracting and training clinicians and researchers is integral to its education mission. Educational activities in the Division of Oncology include a combined Oncology/Hematology Fellowship program accepting 6 fellows each year.
