Position Summary: Manages cancer patient databases, records information that may be used to help detect cancer earlier, improve treatments and increase survival rates. Examines medical and pathology records to determine patient eligibility for the cancer registry. Makes abstracts of medical records by translating the medical terminology into standardized codes that record the patient's diagnosis and treatment information.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities as Assigned:
1.
Abstracts cancer-related data according to established policies and procedures including summarizing patient’s records, demographic data, diagnostic procedures, date of diagnosis, histological diagnosis, and treatment.

Assigns codes for treatments, procedures, and diagnoses according to appropriate classification systems guidelines.
3.
Performs data entry utilizing specialized software.
4.
Maintains compliance with Cancer Registry related policies and procedures.
5.
Contacts patients, providers, and registries to gather follow-up information and verify or correct patient information.
6.
Manages clinical documentation requirements related to regulatory rules and regulations.
7.
Compiles requests for data and statistics from the Cancer Registry for facility planning, administration and internal department requests according to established policies and procedures.
8.
Prepares statistical reports, narrative reports, and graphic presentations of tumor registry data for use by hospital staff, researchers, and other users of registry data in accordance with established policies.
9.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
10.
Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Qualifications:
Required:
•Associate degree in health-related field or equivalent work experience of at least two years with strong emphasis on data integrity and analysis.
•Certified Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) within two (2) years of employment.
Preferred:
•Current Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).
•1 year of ODS or CTR abstraction experience in a CoC Accredited Cancer Program.
•Bachelor’s degree in health information management or a related field.
