JOB SUMMARY:
The Oncology Dietitian will provide nutritional education to cancer patients and Teton Cancer Institute staff. He/she will conduct nutritional assessments and provide medical nutritional therapy for patients who meet criteria for additional care and/or follow up. He/she will also rotate with other Mountain View Hospital registered dietitians being On-Call on weekends for dietary consults at Mountain View Hospital.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide new patient with education on general nutritional concerns for oncology patients and information on nutritional services available as needed including the dietitian’s contact information. Provide appropriate take home resource(s) to be used as needed at the first onset of nutrition-related symptoms. Meet with as many new patient’s in person as availability permits, ideally in conjunction with established new patient education with providers and nurse navigators, but may also occur at an upcoming appointment at or near the start of the patient’s treatment plan. If you are unable to visit new patients in person promptly, provide some general written education, as well as written information on nutritional services available and your contact information. This information can be given to the appropriate medical assistant, nurse or nurse navigator to pass on to the patient for you. Conduct nutritional assessments of patients upon recommendation/referral of providers and/or nursing staff Provide oral and/or written nutritional educations to patients upon request of provider, nursing or patient Follow patients found to be nutritionally at risk Follow up with patients in person while receiving chemotherapy or after provider appointments or radiation therapy as available Conduct a regular chart review of the patients that are being followed when you are unable to meet with them in person. Reviews should consist of evaluation of weight status and reviewing progress notes, lab results, etc Upon evaluation of patients, determine whether patient needs additional consult/education (if so schedule), whether patient needs to continue to be followed related to continued “at risk” status, or whether a patient no longer meets criteria for medical nutrition therapy and no longer needs to be followed Evaluate patients for need of nutritional support through enteral nutrition or TPN Prepare providers with recommendations for enteral nutrition Process paperwork and prescription for such, as well as contact and set up patient with supply source Provide patients with education on care and use of feeding tube (preferable prior to tube placement as some of the providers who place tubes for patients do not provide education on care) Track patients’ weight, labs and tolerances Update nutrition supply source dietitian (typically Coram dietitian or Skilled Nursing Facility nurse/RD) on changes in the patients’ weight, labs or tolerances Update patients’ electronic charts when Coram dietitian (or other) updates you on a shared patient’s status Maintain stock and rotation of patient donated EN formulas and bolus syringes, and distribute to appropriate patients with needs Maintain contact with companies for samples and coupons of nutritional items for patients, such as Boost, Ensure, etc. Prepare and teach monthly classes on nutrition topics chosen in consideration of our oncology patients’ needs Scheduled monthly January through November Advertise classes to patients & determine a way to reach patients most at need Prepare power point slides, handouts, and make reminder calls to participants Provide written education for patients to take home and review Locate already prepared patient handouts from reputable sources such as the American Cancer Society or the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics – maintain an electronic or printed library of these items (depending on level of demand of each) Keep educational materials ordered and in stock Create original patient educational materials on topics Provide recipes to patients for symptom maintenance, weight maintenance and protein store protection Keep updated on new oncology nutrition research and recommendations Maintain membership in the Oncology Dietetics Practice Group, review literature updates from newsletters, etc. As available, attend Oncology Nutrition Symposiums held every other year Participate in continuing education credits through conferences, webinars, classes, etc as required to maintain credentials and medical license Attend weekly Radiation Physician & Team Patient Rounds Meeting Attend and participate in monthly TCI staff meetings, as well as any other scheduled meetings deemed appropriate by the director/manager of oncology or other TCI leadership Provide a minimum of one staff education per quarter at a TCI staff meeting. Nutrition education may be on a topic that would be beneficial for employee health, or may be an education that could help them in providing care to the cancer patient. Completes required hospital educational/skill validation annual reviews within the established time frame – currently assigned through BRIDGE or HEALTHSTREAM. Attends and actively participates in interdepartmental meetings with the Dietary Department, as assigned or invited. Actively participates by giving constructive input and fulfilling assignments to provide education and/or training to staff as assigned. Attend and participate in Tumor Boards as available. Follows hospital and center policies and procedures. Participates in the development and attainment of departmental goals at MVH and TCI. Contributes to the overall functioning of TCI and MVH by assisting where and when needed. Functions as a positive team player. Maintains a clean, safe working environment. Completes employee illness/injury reports and forwards to the Department Manager per policy. Uses proper body mechanics at all times. Requests assistance when needed. Understands and practices facility security. Responds to requests in a helpful, cooperative manner. Able to set priorities and copes with interruptions. Adjusts to changes in schedule and/or work area. Preserves the confidentiality of all Protected Health Information (PHI) observed. Follows the Organization Wide Compliance Policy and applicable Federal and State law, including HIPAA. Acts in accordance with hospital policy regarding this subject. Remains calm, reassuring, and able to function and provide direction during emergency situations. Provides proper notification of absence and tardiness. Reports to work on time. Observes regulations for break and lunch. Takes responsibility for the appropriate management of benefit hours. Completes time sheets per established procedure assuring accuracy of hours recorded. Ability to make timely and effective decisions based upon the characteristics of the current situation. Ability to schedule time and utilize resources effectively and efficiently.
