Onsite Laboratory Supervisor

The Opportunity:

In this role, you will report to the Manager, Onsite Services and will work closely with the Avantor’s Lab and Production Services team of over 1,500 on- and off-site expert personnel – and our customers – to perform customized, mission-based lab work and research protocols that help return time back to science.

Location: Lexington, MA

Shift: Mon – Fri, days

What we’re looking for:  

High School diploma or GED is required; Associate degree or undergraduate degree in business or science related field is preferred.  

Minimum 4 years of experience in scientific service management, customer service, purchasing, and/or account management is required.  

Microsoft Teams experience preferred. 

Covid-19 vaccinations required.

Previous experience managing associates required.

Scientific services management required. At a minimum, this includes inventory management, solutions preparation, lab support, BSL-2 services and others.

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required. 

Knowledge of Information and ERP Systems; intermediate Microsoft Office Knowledge with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.

Excellent customer service skills with a professional can-do demeanor required.

Basic purchasing knowledge required.

Ability to self-manage, self-motivate, be multi-task oriented with flexible, adaptable, and proactive thinking required.

Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with both customers and various departments within Avantor.

Proficient in trouble shooting with the confidence to make sound business decisions with limited consultation with manager.

Understanding, ability to administer, and ensure a high regard for safety, quality, and adherence to protocols, policies, and procedures required.  

Able to lift 50 lbs. required.

Conform to all customer requirements for background checks, health and safety issues, security clearances and medical checkups required.

Inside sales experience and cross-referencing skills strongly desired.

GMP, GLP, CPR, spill containment, IATA, DOT, IMDG, Hazwoper, and/or OSHA training is desired.

Avantor’s Lab and Production Services team is a crucial part of the Avantor Services group serving over 500 customers in biopharma, pharmaceutical, educational, industrial, and high-tech industries with customizable, flexible solutions and end-to-end laboratory operations support.

In this role you will:

Lead and direct team efforts across multiple sites as well as perform work provided in scope of work (SOW) related to customer requirements.

Act as a single point of contact for all research staff and the customer. Maintain operational efficiency while proactively identifying and implementing process improvements in both internal and customer-owned processes.

Train new staff working in the area to familiarize them with lab policies and procedures ahead of commencing any lab work.

Work with service providers to ensure equipment is running effectively.

Develop cost savings and avoidance reports.

Oversee and maintain routine equipment maintenance/calibration (standardization of pH/conductivity meters, monthly cleaning of solution prep fume hood and pilot plant biosafety cabinets, RODI hose replacement). Additionally, activities would include pre and post lab follow-up to ensure sanitary conditions are maintained including, but not limited to mopping, cleaning with bleach, disinfecting areas used to prepare solutions.

Manage solution pickup/disposal with requestors, including email communication.

Manage inventory for the customer to provide the most effective product mix at the right volumes.

Manage other lab-related services (i.e., freezer de-icing, BSC and incubator cleaning, glass wash and autoclave) to ensure their successful and timely completion daily.

The supervisor ensures all technicians follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintains compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).

Act in accordance with all Avantor and customer policies: personnel, EHS, Bioethics, etc.

·Communicate and coordinate with onsite Avantor Sciences team.

Develop metrics and participate in regular reviews with customer leadership to provide awareness of resource availability, volumes requested and prepared as well as process improvements arising from the former.

Coaches and motivates team members to successfully perform job requirements and to meet / exceed goals and objectives. Encourages through mentoring, as well as supporting individual, professional and team growth. Able to effectively manage performance and mitigate/address resource challenges.

Management of open order status reports, customer metrics and department reports, and SOP/SOW maintenance.

Provides training and development as well as back-up to associates to perform required tasks.

Performs administrative duties such as associate performance appraisals, succession planning, timecard review/approval, vacation scheduling, etc.

Creates and maintains: SOPs, SOWs, SPIs and KPIs.

Acts as a liaison between customer, Avantor Leadership, VWR Services and VWR Sales.

Ensures GxP Compliance and Good Documentation Practices.

Brings Value to the customer from personal development in the industry.

Other duties as assigned.
