*The Research Initiative in Infectious Diseases (RIIS) at the Institute of Human Virology (IHV)*seeks to hire a peer with lived experience of substance use for the position of*Community Health Worker (CHW)*. The position will require community-based work and involvement in a research project that will evaluate a peer-delivered behavioral intervention to improve retention and adherence to long-acting injectable formulations of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and antiretroviral therapy among substance using racial/ethnic minority individuals. The work will be conducted at community sites in Washington, DC sites. The position will report to the RIIS Director of Community Research Partnerships. This role is a full-time position. For this job, we are seeking a “peer” which is defined as someone who shares life experiences with the patient population, including lived experience of substance use, as well as recovery experience. Experience with HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and antiretroviral therapy is preferred, especially experience with long-acting injectable formulations. The CHW will be required to administer a brief behavioral support intervention, help patients meet personal recovery goals, and support patients in meeting these goals. Some responsibilities of the CHW are novel, such as conducting intervention sessions; the research team will train the CHWs in these approaches. The CHW will maintain ongoing patient support and will serve as a motivator, ally, and role model for patients in this community by supporting their efforts towards adherence to long-acting injectable formulations of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and antiretroviral therapy. We are looking for a peer who is passionate about doing this job, able to work as part of a diverse team, and is keen to learn new skills and intervention approaches. The expectation is that the applicant fits the description and is interested in and motivated to assist individuals receiving long-acting injectable formulations of HIV PrEP and antiretroviral therapy. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland. * *Primary Duties:* *COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORKER I* 1. Recruits a client base within the community by identifying, locating, interviewing, and screening individuals who may be appropriate for the program. 2. Provides general information to individuals and families on program objectives and services; eligibility requirements and benefits; confidentiality of information etc. Distributes informational materials and literature. 3. Conducts visual inspection of the physical condition of the client`s house to identify factors that may be detrimental to maintaining a safe, healthy, and comfortable living environment. 4. Serves as a liaison between the client and community resources including department staff, City, State, and Federal social services agencies. 5. Schedules clients for appointments with health care providers, reminds them of pending appointments, and contacts them to inquire into reasons for missed appointments. Escorts clients to various appointments to ensure compliance and provide support. 6. Assists with client retention by following up on all contacts for continued progress assessment and locating those clients who have moved or lost contact with the program. 7. Assists with the facilitation of the clinic process by greeting clients and making sure that they are registered to be seen. 8. Assists with planning, organizing, and implementing community special events such as health fairs, workshops etc. 9. Participates in staff meeting and conferences. Reports on community outreach activities including problems and concerns. Prepares written reports and maintains records of outreach contacts and activities. 10. Updates information in database from various data forms collected. Maintains a good working relationship with all members of the community. *OR* *COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORKER II * 1. Provides crisis intervention through individual counseling, providing basic health education, assisting clients access various social services, and referring clients to alternate care facilities. 2. Conducts initial assessment in order to determine individual client needs. 3. Speaks before neighborhood groups and attends community meetings to establish communication and rapport; to promote services; and assist in resolving problems facing the community. Prepares and distributes informational literature. 4. Participates in the evaluation of materials and methods designed to meet the educational needs of the client community. 5. May provide guidance and training over other outreach workers. 6. Performs all of the duties of a Community Outreach Worker I. *COMMUNITY OUTREACH WORKER I* *Education:*High-school diploma or GED. *Experience:*None *OTHER:* Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. *CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:* Employees in this job class may be required to use their personal automobile while conducting official business and possess a valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or Commercial Class B Driver's License (CDL).
