OPEN RANK: Mass Spectrometry Supervisor or Manager

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Pharmacy Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is currently seeking creative, motivated, and disciplined candidates to fill the Mass Spectrometry Supervisor (Laboratory Research Supervisor) OR Mass Spectrometry Manager (Laboratory Research Manager) position related to mass spectrometry-based analyses for its Mass Spectrometry Center. Areas of particular interest regarding expertise include small molecule quantitation, metabolomics, lipidomics, and/or proteomics. Multiple openings are currently available. The selected candidate will fill one of these positions commensurate with education and experience.

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD, level scientist with preferred post-doctoral experience. A Master of Sciences (MS) scientist with experience will also be considered. Strong history of demonstrating research success working both independently and as part of team.

The UMB School of Pharmacy Mass Spectrometry Center is an Organized Research Center that hosts 20 state-of-the-art mass spectrometers and has expertise in metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, drug analysis, protein structure, and mass spectrometry imaging with an emphasis on collaborative research. PRIMARY DUTIES – Mass Spectrometry Supervisor (Laboratory Research Supervisor)

Performs independent projects. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data and/or test information and research techniques; and records/reports results.Perform routine and advanced laboratory research activities such as: mass spectrometry-based analyses and associated experimental tasks, preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures and specimens.Prepare or assist with the preparation of manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and journal articles and grant proposals. Presents research findings.Responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations and staff of a research laboratory and providing administrative and technical support to research activities. Contributes to creation of new laboratory or expansion of existing laboratory.Supervise laboratory staff including training, scheduling, coordinating, and delegating work, monitoring, and evaluating performance.Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Overseeing and maintaining proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning, ordering of required components and explaining/resolving technical issues.May provide for establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment or machinery to be ordered, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures for using new equipment.Develop and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs). Develop and maintain collaborative connections with the investigators.Identify, advise, or assist investigators with developing strategies for sample preparation to identify, quantify, and characterize small molecules, lipids, and/or proteins.Participate in development and implementation of training materials used to train staff, students, or fellows in advanced techniques by mass spectrometry used in the Mass Spectrometry Center through informal discussions or formal workshops offered by the Center.Supervise and assist in the training of graduate students, post-doctoral, international fellows, and/or junior technical personnel in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques.Performs other duties as assigned.

PRIMARY DUTIES – Mass Spectrometry Manager (Laboratory Research Manager)

Perform duties of the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory Supervisor position. Manage the development and execution of research studies. Revises studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.Perform laboratory research activities required by the study(s).Perform laboratory maintenance and troubleshooting.Assemble and assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics for publication. Present research findings.Manage laboratory operations including the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Overseeing and maintaining proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning, ordering of required components and explaining/resolving technical issues. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions.Provide administrative and technical support to the research activities. Ensure the design, development, documentation, and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. Contribute to creation of new laboratory or expansion of existing laboratory(s).Manage laboratory staff including training, scheduling, coordinating and delegating work, and monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.Provide for establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment or machinery to be ordered, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures for using new equipment.Foster and support a conducive collaborator/consultant/client environment, providing assessment, training, and advisement in research area.Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Mass Spectrometry Supervisor (Laboratory Research Supervisor)

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Master’s or PhD level scientist preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of experience in laboratory research. At least three (3) years in the relevant area of Mass Spectrometry preferred. Post Doctoral experience is preferred. Strong history of demonstrated research success working both independently and as part of a team preferred.

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.

OTHER: May consider a combination of directly related experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Mass Spectrometry Manager (Laboratory Research Manager)

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Master’s or PhD level scientist preferred. MS scientist will be also be considered.

SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work condition, and monitoring the work of others.

PREFERRED EDUCATION EXPERIENCE: PhD level scientists preferred with postdoctoral experience preferred. MS scientists with experience will also be considered. Strong history of demonstrated research success working both independently and as part of a team preferred.

OTHER: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
