Assistant or Associate Director HLA Lab

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) is seeking a clinical PhD, or Pathologist (MD), to assist the HLA Laboratory Medical Director in the overall management of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics laboratory. They will contribute to the lab's Quality Assurance program, assist in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, help to revise and update current standard operating procedures, and design appropriate validation studies, as necessary.

This position will work closely with technical staff, and with the Medical Director, to design, implement, and evaluate all technical processes that involve the laboratory.

Clinical service responsibilities will include assisting the HLA Laboratory Director in reviewing and approving all types of histocompatibility and diagnostic testing. The laboratory will provide 24/7 service in University Hospital.  The Assistant, or Associate, Medical Director will share on-call responsibilities with the HLA Laboratory Director, including clinical consults and technical and interpretation questions, as needed.

Participating in the training of laboratory personnel, residents, and fellows from the pathology and transplant department is one of the fundamental responsibilities of this faculty position. The successful candidate will also participate in clinical or translational research efforts.

The successful candidate must hold a medical (M.D. or D.O.) or doctoral (Ph.D.) degree and will either be dual board certified by the American Board of Pathology (CP or AP/CP) and by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI), or by the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) alone, if the candidate holds a Ph.D. Candidates are required to hold HLA Laboratory Director Certification from the American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI), or be eligible for certification at time of hire. Applicants must meet CLIA requirements of a Histocompatibility Technical Supervisor. The successful candidate will have experience in histocompatibility testing, transplant immunology and immunogenetics and be able to provide clinical laboratory support for solid organ and stem cell transplantation recipients and donors. Salary and rank will be based on background and experience.
