General Services Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 250 city government facilities including: City Hall, Public Safety Building (Jail), Norfolk Consolidated Courts Complex, entertainment venues such as the Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall, Attucks Theater, the Virginia Zoo; a cruise terminal, all police and fire stations, recreation centers; pools and numerous city office buildings. The Division is staffed with 96 employees responsible for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC, elevators, roofing, moves and relocations of city employees, finance, and administrative functions. The City of Norfolk’s Department of General Services is seeking a qualified candidate for the Operating Engineer II position to maintain and repair commercial HVAC systems and operate and maintain automated building control systems. The Operating Engineer II will also be responsible for overseeing contractor’s work relating to HVAC and automated building control systems. Essential Functions Essential functions include, but are not limited to: + Operates and maintains automated building control systems by monitoring system performance, implementing program changes, and coordinating repairs for non-operational portions of the automated control systems. + Oversees plant operations by regulating energy consumption, managing boiler and chiller systems, and performing load shedding functions. + Maintains heating and cooling systems by conducting preventive maintenance, changing filters, and checking bolts, pulleys, motors and pumps. + Receives and processes service requests by assigning repairs and making decisions to repair or replace failed components based on knowledge of equipment. + Monitors and maintains video surveillance systems by inspecting video security cameras and associated multiplexers and recording equipment and performing repairs and new installations. + Assists with all other city facilities including the Jail. Education/Experience Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training. + Two years’ experience in HVAC AND/OR Direct Digital Control Systems; access door control systems; video surveillance and recording equipment; or elevator monitoring equipment. Additional Information & Requirements + Valid Driver’s License required. A DMV transcript dated within 30 days will be required if selected for hire. + Plumbing and Piping, Heating and Air Conditioning, or Mechanical certifications may be required within six months of employment, depending upon work location. Work Schedule: + Starting/Training Schedule will be Monday-Friday from 7am-3:30pm. + Regular schedule will be 4 days per week at 10 hours per day on a rotating schedule. + Required Shift Schedule that rotates will be required to cover 24/7/365 operation of energy plant and will include weekends, evenings, overnight, and holidays. + Occasional overtime work will be required due to facility emergencies and/or contractor work scheduling. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit.
