Operating Room Assistant - Mercy Lorain Hospital
Shift/Schedule:
Full Time - Scheduled for 40 Weekly HoursShift Times - 11am-7:30pm (Primary)No weekend, holiday, or on call availability is requiredGeneral Summary
Will work under direct supervision to assist in transporting patients, sets up OR, maintains and operates special equipment in the OR as required, maintains surgical instrument sets and equipment and ensures proper sterile conditions, orders supplies, stocks and maintains storage areas in the OR for service, assists surgeon during operative procedure, performs other related duties as assigned.
Adheres to established quality standards while performing assigned duties in an efficient manner to minimize material-related expense. Employee carries out responsibilities specified by departmental policies and procedures and other duties assigned by department Manager.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
BLS certification, high school equivalent.
Knowledge of basic mechanics and electronic equipment sufficient to understand technical service manuals in order to troubleshoot and inform others of problems. Ability to establish and maintain courteous and cooperative relations with patient and staff. Must be versatile and flexible enough to work under pressure to start and complete numerous assignments. Ability to move and position patients and large pieces of equipment.
One year of past experience in the OR (preferred). After selection and placement into this position, at least six months of on-the-job training is required to learn various surgical procedures, special room setups, equipment assembly, cleaning assembly and sterilization of instrumentation, sterile technique, scrubbing, assisting and medical terminology related to the job duties.
Working Conditions
Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to assigned Manager and may take direction from Charge Nurse.
