Responsibilities The Surgical Services Technologist functions as a member of the surgical team in assisting the Operating Room Registered Nurse (Team Leader) in the preparation and implementation of care for the surgical patient. The Technologist collaborates with other team members of the healthcare delivery team, to include physicians, to deliver quality, safe and efficient health care. The Technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique, in combination with knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation tools and technologies, to facilitate the physician’s performance of surgical procedures. The Technologist is responsible for creating and maintaining a sterile environment, proper handling and care of surgical instruments and equipment, and passing those instruments to the surgeon and/or assistant for use during surgery. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to specific issues and data reflective of the patient’s status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for the primary populations of patients served by the department. The Technologist is expected to attend continuing education opportunities that enhance his/her skills and job knowledge. The Technologist is responsible for taking on-call duty after normal hours of operation, weekends and holidays, on a rotational basis. All technologists are responsible for taking call as assigned, and should be able to return to the hospital within 30 minutes of being called back in for an emergency case. If they are called in for a STAT C-Section they must be in the building, set up the case, and incision must be made within 30 minutes of the time the STAT C-Section was called. Garnet Health System provides a compensation range to comply with the New York State law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The range for the role is $27.44-$33.04 hourly. The range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits. When determining a team member’s compensation and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget and internal equity) Qualifications Minimum Education: High School graduate or equivalent with advanced education/training in Anatomy and Physiology and successful completion of a surgical technology program that provided a wide range of scrub experience. Minimum Experience: At least one (1) year experience in a hospital or other healthcare setting is desirable, but not required. Experience in an O.R. is preferred. Critical thinking skills. Can perform efficiently in emergency patient situations. Knowledge of growth and development for specific age groups. Knowledge of basic aseptic techniques. Completed a surgical technologist training program in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Be performing surgical technologist duties for the federal government Required Certification/Registration: For all staff hired after January 1, 2015, certification in Surgical Technology required, or must be obtained within twelve (12) months of date of hire for continued employment. For all staff hired after January 1, 2015, graduation from a CAAHEP – ABHES accredited surgical technology Program and maintenance of the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (CCCT) required. Certification must be renewed every 4 years. Must complete 15 hours of continuing education per calendar year (Jan. 1st through 20th) and be able to provide proof of courses taken that relate to the surgical technologist’s position, i.e. surgery, sterilization, aseptic technique, operating procedures, etc. BLS Certification within 6 months of employment and every two (2) years thereafter. Physical Requirements: Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching. Working Conditions: Environmental Demands and Exposure to Hazards: Works in a clean, well- lighted, heated or ventilated facility. No routine exposure to hazards. Physical Demands: Demonstrates physical and functional ability to perform full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks. Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger and hand dexterity to operate computer and office equipment. Can withstand long periods of sitting, standing and/or constant walking. Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. Mental Demands: Ability to foster collaborative relationships, to work well under pressure, to organize and synthesize new information, and prioritize tasks. Possesses critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility. Ability to multi-task. Required detailed attention to work in an environment where interruptions cannot be controlled. Demonstrates sensitivity to customer needs and expectations. May be subject to irregular hours including evenings or potentially weekends to participate in operational and community events as necessary. Workplace type On-site
