Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician

The High Desert Power Project is a 3x1 combined cycle facility with a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Water Treatment Plant. Major equipment includes 3 Siemens 501 FD3 Combustion Turbines with Alstom Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG's), Toshiba 330 MW Steam Turbine/Generator, Actiflo Clarifier, Cold Lime Softening using Microfiltration, Reverse Osmosis, and HPD Forced Circulation Crystallizer.

Opportunity Summary

The O&M Technician's core responsibilities encompass the seamless operation of power plant systems, spanning from start-up to shutdown phases. They adeptly manage a range of major auxiliary apparatus, from air compressors to boiler water treatment systems, ensuring optimal functioning. Additionally, they conduct routine inspections, execute minor repairs, and diligently monitor equipment performance, collaborating closely with Control Room Operators to maintain operational efficiency. With a keen eye for detail, they conduct water chemistry analyses, maintain meticulous logs, and promptly report any irregularities, embodying a proactive approach to maintenance and operational excellence.

Primary Duties

Assist in the start-up, shutdown, and normal operations of power plant systems, ensuring all procedures are followed correctly and safely. Operate major auxiliary apparatus, including air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler water treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, boiler feedwater and condensate systems, as well as locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment. Perform operating tests, inspections, and execute minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment to achieve proper operating conditions. Execute orders from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels for clearing equipment or making it ready for service, following detailed operating instructions and procedures. This includes clearing, tagging, testing, and safety taping all relevant operations. Conduct routine water chemistry analysis and operate Continuous Emissions Monitoring equipment to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Maintain detailed and accurate logs of all operations and equipment statuses as assigned. Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of work, documenting them thoroughly, and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions. Assist maintenance personnel during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance periods. Fulfill other tasks as required by the Shift Supervisor or the Operations Manager, ensuring all instructions are followed precisely.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Working with hazardous materials is required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position offers a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, "Modified Dupont Schedule". Position may require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The initial starting hourly rate of pay will range from $35.78 - $48.22 depending on experience.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. A minimum of two years of hands-on experience in power plant operations, including start-up, shutdown, and routine maintenance activities, is desirable. Extensive working knowledge of the power plant industry, including regulatory and operational standards, is also desirable. Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling requirements is highly desirable. Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion and steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety protocols, hazardous waste management, and the inspection and recording of plant parameters is essential. Experience with interpreting piping and instrument schematics, as well as managing process controls, is required. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
