Operations Controller – North America

 

The Operations Controller – North America is responsible for oversight and providing the strategic vision of the Plant and Cost Accounting team to include organizational structure, systems, processes and policies to improve the company’s financial performance and controls. This position is the controlling leader for all North America (NA) plants (23) and about 80 associates, serving as a business partner and advisor to Manufacturing Finance, Plant Operations and Americas Leadership teams - Consistently practicing executive-level communication (includes researching best practices across the industry and providing proposals to the organization).

 

The incumbent will ensure consistent, reliable and useable management information for factory performance and other financial information used for external reporting - Certifying compliance with policies. He/She will provide adequate controls to insure the protection of company assets within all plants. This associate will lead the related plant monthly financial closing and processes within North America - Confirming that accounting records are prepared, maintained and reported in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

 

This role will perform various talent management duties (recruiting, coaching and development of team resources) and will build strong relationships with headquarters and the plant Leadership team. In addition, the Operations Controller - NA has a matrix team of Finance Business Partners at many plant locations as well. 

 

This position will serve as the plant Finance Project Lead on multiple strategic projects supporting business and Information Technology (IT) initiatives (includes building/managing a team to assess the impact, offer input into design, adjust/add controls as necessary, test the new process/system and monitor post go-live). The incumbent is the point-of-contact on strategic initiatives (including acquisitions, mergers, divestitures and restructuring) for the plants.

 

Job Duties / Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Lead and continuously improve the monthly financial closing and related processes within North America. Ensure that accounting records are prepared, maintained and reported in accordance with GAAP. Consistently streamline, standardize and add efficiency, as well as accuracy to closing process. Hire and develop associates, by transferring knowledge of operations, financial concepts and business issues. Utilize management tools to provide associates with performance feedback and facilitate their development. Build sound relationships with leadership (within HQ and at the plants). Provide strategic direction to company regarding organizational structure, systems, processes and policies (including benchmarking best practices). Serve as the plant Finance Project Lead on multiple strategic projects supporting business and IT initiatives (includes building/managing a team to assess the impact, provide recommended design, adjust/add controls as necessary, test the new process/system and monitor post go-live). Point-of-contact on strategic initiatives for plants (including acquisitions, mergers, divestitures and restructuring), as well as provide recommendations for costing strategies for Goodyear. Provide leadership/guidance to the manufacturing Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) team. Serving as a matrix manager to the Finance business partners at each lant, assisting them in execution of plant business objectives/process improvements and maintaining overall financial integrity and controls. Participate in assigned activities to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and assist with financial and operational audits performed by internal/external auditors.

 

KEY EXPERIENCE

Bachelors' degree in Accounting or Finance Desired: Masters degree and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) 12 or more years of experience in accounting/analysis in a manufacturing cost environment. Expert in all accounting standards affecting manufacturing operations. In-depth knowledge of Finance's contribution and impact (i.e., financial statements, working capital, financial planning, reporting, budgets and IT and relative systems). Experience in management (including managing a diverse work force).

 

KEY SKILLS

Strong Microsoft Excel skills. Effective leadership and ability to influence others. Proven analytical, technical and problem-solving skills (developed through increasingly responsible financial assignments [financial acumen]). Demonstrated coaching and interpersonal skills. Highly organized and has ability to manage concurrent deadlines and multiple priorities. Executive communication skills that include oral delivery, presentation style and written delivery that are well organized at the audience's level of understanding. Working knowledge of SOX and GAAP.
