Operations & Maintenance (O&M) / IC&E Technician

The Orange Grove Energy Facility is a 98.3 MW natural gas simple cycle plant featuring two GE LM6000 PC Sprint combustion turbines. Located in Pala, CA, it sits roughly halfway between Riverside and San Diego, easily accessible via I-15. This strategic location allows the plant to efficiently serve the energy needs of the surrounding areas.

Opportunity Summary

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) IC&E Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of plant equipment by overseeing daily activities, maintaining, and updating operational procedures, and adhering to facility standards. This position involves supporting maintenance through the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), coordinating with vendors and contractors, and managing warehouse and inventory functions to ensure organization and compliance. Additionally, the role requires proactive issue reporting and adherence to environmental and safety regulations. The O&M Technician must conduct themselves with high professionalism and ensure all tasks contribute to the facility’s operational excellence.

Here's a look at some of the work you'll be performing:

Plant Operations and Maintenance

Perform corrective, preventive, predictive, and emergency maintenance on electrical systems and components, including motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, and storage batteries up to 4160 volts. This includes inspecting, repairing, installing, calibrating, and maintaining systems in power stations, including switchgear up to 13.8KV, control centers, inverters, chargers, and main generators. Calibrate, test, maintain, and troubleshoot power plant instrumentation and control systems, including control valves, variable speed drives, battery chargers, inverters, transmitters, and analyzers. Perform these tasks on both general power plant and natural gas-fired simple cycle plant equipment, such as combustion turbines, HRSGs, and steam turbines. Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize Allen Bradley PLC systems and other control systems like DCS and turbine control equipment. Inspect, diagnose faults, fine-tune PLC programs, collaborate with engineers, and implement system improvements. Support and demonstrate proficiency in using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), adhering to the facility’s maintenance philosophy. Visually inspect and listen to equipment to determine the need for repair or adjustment. Assist with equipment maintenance by cleaning, adjusting, tightening, performing preventative or corrective maintenance, and identifying equipment needing corrective action. Write and submit corrective work orders. Plan and coordinate mechanical, electrical, and technical contract maintenance activities with managers and employees, including daily, short-range, and long-range planning. Continuously review maintenance plans and activities to identify opportunities to increase the value of the Owner's assets. Utilize records and reports to determine the frequency of maintenance requirements. Interact with Operations & Maintenance staff to enhance maintenance effectiveness and address operational challenges. Ensure maintenance activities are supported with necessary parts, tooling, and services in a timely manner. Input and manage work orders, assisting the Plant Manager in reviewing completed work orders for accuracy. Maintain paper and electronic files to document maintenance history, ensuring compliance with documentation standards. Ensure the proper operation and monitoring of equipment during your shift to maintain efficient and safe plant operations. Supervise day-to-day operations and maintenance activities as directed by the Plant Manager to ensure smooth facility operation. Read meters, gauges, or automatic recording devices at specified intervals, recording operating data to verify facility conditions and analyze trends. Use facility operating procedures and technical manuals to start, stop, adjust, or modify equipment operations, ensuring all equipment functions within the recommended range. Keep the Plant Manager informed of unusual conditions, damaged equipment, environmental issues, and safety concerns. Always report discrepancies and make recommendations for improvements. Write and update operational procedures to reflect changes and improvements in plant processes. Conduct yourself with a high degree of professionalism and ethics, both at work and personally, adhering to company standards and practices.

Vendor and Contractor Coordination

Coordinate with maintenance contractors to manage work orders and ensure the efficient use of equipment downtime. Contact vendors and contractors to obtain quotes or estimates for goods and services. Review specifications, scope of work, and pricing with the Plant Manager, consultants, or employees. Submit Requests For Quotations (RFQs) to vendors and contractors as needed. Procure goods and services by issuing approved purchase orders and ensuring timely acquisition. Manage the scheduling of deliveries and work dates with vendors and contractors to align with operational needs. Ensure all contractors adhere to OSHA and company safety regulations and policies. Recommend appropriate service levels to the Plant Manager to ensure timely and cost-effective work.

Warehouse and Inventory Management

Ensure the warehouse is neat, organized, and orderly to facilitate efficient operations and inventory management. Receive goods into the warehouse promptly, place them in their proper locations, and inspect to ensure they match the specifications required in the purchase order. Keep accurate records of equipment and tools that are off-site for service or repair. Perform inventory audits as specified in the Administrative Manual or as directed by the Plant Manager to ensure accuracy and compliance. Report any issues, errors, and discrepancies to the Plant Manager promptly to address and resolve problems effectively. Assist in maintaining and updating vendor lists and information in the CMMS to ensure accurate records and efficient procurement. Complete purchase orders and input inventory information (such as additions and deletions) into the CMMS. Ensure proper approval for purchase orders and oversee the return of goods as needed, including managing shipping options for returns and equipment.

Compliance and Safety

Read, understand, and comply with all facility safety and regulatory procedures. Supervise outage work and ensure adherence to the overall safety program during the shift. Maintain environmental compliance within air and water permit parameters.

Working Relationships

The O&M / IC&E Technician reports directly to the Plant Manager.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

The work schedule is 12 hour shifts with a rotating schedule of 7 days-on, 7 days-off, rotating between dayshift and nightshift. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The starting compensation for this position ranges from $37 to $55 per hour. This broad range reflects the varying levels of experience we are considering for the role.

Job Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. An associate degree or technical certification in industrial maintenance, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field is preferred. Relevant experience in plant operations, maintenance, and repair can substitute for formal education. Advanced training or certifications in safety regulations, CMMS, or specialized equipment are a plus. Experience in performing maintenance on electrical systems up to 4160 volts, including motors, generators, transformers, and control equipment. Skilled in calibrating, testing, and troubleshooting power plant instrumentation, control systems, and PLCs (Allen Bradley, DCS) across various plant equipment, including both general and natural gas-fired simple cycle plants. Demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining power generation equipment, including turbines, generators, and related systems, in a gas turbine power generation facility. Proven skills in equipment monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair in a power plant setting are essential, including expertise in using meters, gauges, and automatic recording devices. Ability to interpret and apply technical manuals and facility operating procedures to start, stop, adjust, or modify equipment operations within recommended ranges. Proficiency in using CMMS for maintenance planning, work order management, and adherence to maintenance philosophies. Experience with vendor coordination, including managing vendor relationships, obtaining quotes, and ensuring maintenance activities are supported by necessary parts, tooling, and services in a timely manner. Competence in performing preventative and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and technical equipment, including writing, and submitting work orders and maintaining detailed records. Skilled in maintaining an organized warehouse, managing inventory, performing audits, and ensuring accurate record-keeping for equipment and tools. Knowledge of safety protocols and environmental regulations, with experience ensuring compliance and managing safety programs during operational shifts. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times.
