Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician

Athens Generating, a key player in the energy sector located just 30 miles south of Albany in the beautiful town of Athens, NY. Opportunity Summary

The O&M Technician will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all power plant equipment and assist with maintenance tasks as assigned.

 Primary Duties

Assist in the start-up, shut-down, and normal operations of power plant systems. Conducts routine tours of the plant to inspect equipment, provides feedback to the Lead Operations and Maintenance Technician and to other employees Complies with all site safety requirements and procedures. Identifies safety hazards and takes corrective actions as necessary Becomes lead system representative on assigned systems Maintains accuracy of shift operating logs, records, time sheets, work orders and other administrative documents related to the power plant Performs routine cycle chemistry testing and makes the necessary adjustments to optimize efficiency. Checks daily consumption rates of chemicals, gases, fuels, water and other consumables; monitors inventories and initiates action to replenish when appropriate. Performs in all plant switching and tagging of equipment in accordance with approved procedures and prudent operations and maintenance practices Performs electrical and mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks under direction of management when assigned Investigates plant problems, incidents, accidents and unusual events, and provides analyses, recommendations, reports, and appropriate follow-up plans Reads and records gauges and meters. Performs routine operational tests and adjustments on all power plant systems and components as required. Develops, assists, and revises operations and maintenance related procedures Performs and maintains housekeeping standards and duties Performs routine preventive and predictive maintenance on all systems and equipment; support corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment when properly trained or supervised Performs other duties necessary to fulfill plant requirements Displays routine proficiency improvements towards becoming qualified as a Lead Operations and Maintenance Technician Communicates with other company personnel on-site and at other locations. Represents the company in dealing with the public, steam and power customers, vendors, contractors, regulators, and other non-company personnel. Assist other team members and work with all departments to support New Athens Generating in achieving their goals

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the O&M Manager and receives direction from the Lead O&M Technician. The O&M Technician may work with maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Working with hazardous materials is required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. Travel as needed to support other locations within the Kimura Project.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position entails a modified Dupont work schedule. Position may require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The initial starting compensation will range from $44.19 to $46.98 per hour.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Knowledge of power plant mechanical and electrical equipment, including motors, pumps, boilers, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, pollution control equipment, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc. and associated maintenance functions. Ability to complete site-specific qualification program. Knowledge of power plant safety, policies and procedures, especially in areas such as chemical handling, high-energy systems, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, and heavy equipment Knowledge of and ability to understand fundamental principles related to physics, mathematics, AC&DE electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermal dynamics and chemistry Knowledge of and experience in at least four (4) of the following skills: pipefitting, welding, machining, rigging, rotating machine repair, fabrication, machine alignment, basic vibration analysis, and using electrical test equipment Knowledge of chemistry and power plant chemical applications Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plants Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists and slings Ability to locate, troubleshoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment and/or maintain, install, modify and troubleshoot plant electrical systems and equipment Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members, conveying technical information clearly Ability to operate and maintain various analytical and test equipment Experience with gas turbine combined cycle operations preferred Maintain a valid driver's license at all times
