Operations & Maintenance Technician

Commonwealth Chesapeake Peaker facility is about 3/4 mile south of the Maryland line. The plant was built in 2000 and has 7 LM 6000s capable of producing 315 MW at nominal load.

General Summary

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the electrical generation facility.    The O&M Technician ensures strict compliance with safety, health, and environmental procedures related to plant operations and maintenance including but not limited to Lockout Tagout, Job Safety Analysis, Confined Space, Hot Work, Electrical Safety, and PPE.

Primary Functions

O&M Technicians function as part of an efficient and motivated team that operate and maintain the facility. These technicians perform all duties in each of the areas of skill sets with minimum direction and supervision.

Instrument/electrical preventative maintenance includes calibration/testing, installation, troubleshooting, and repairs on plant equipment including: process control equipment, motors, generators, batteries, transformers, regulators, valves, circuit breakers, disconnecting switches, analog/digital instrumentation, control relays, communication equipment, lighting and additional auxiliary equipment within the generating station and associated substations. Mechanical preventative maintenance, calibration/testing, installation, troubleshooting and repair on plant equipment including: aero-derivative turbines, generators, clutches, motors, pumps, compressors, and auxiliary equipment. Additional duties include vibration analysis, laser alignments, and oil analysis. Instrumentation and Controls/ preventative maintenance includes calibration/testing, installation, troubleshooting and repairs on plant equipment (hardware/software) including: the turbine control system (MicroNet), the balance of plant control system (Emerson - DeltaV), telemetry/SCADA (GE Harris, OSIsoft Pi), plant servers, networking, updates, and security. Safely operate plant equipment needed to perform essential job duties, e.g., vehicles, forklift, man lift, cranes, hoists, welding and cutting equipment, etc. Use appropriate safety equipment and techniques in the daily performance of all work activities. Read and interpret complex blueprints, wiring and schematic diagrams, and perform both internal and external switching and tagging for mechanical and electrical systems. Effectively utilizes computer maintenance management system (Maximo) to generate tasks, workorders, requisitions and maintain spare parts inventory. Update and maintain accurate pass down information, logs, and records. Actively participate in the site's Safety Management, Environmental, EHS Contingency, and Maintenance Plans. These plans incorporate the policies, procedures, and record keeping for a safe work environment in compliance with all agencies.  With applicable training and procedures, safety fill, shutdown, unload, and inspect site diesel fuel handling, storage, and distribution systems. Maintain high standards of safety and housekeeping of the assigned maintenance areas. Cooperate and participate as a team member to accomplish plant goals and objectives. Ensure adequate turnover of information between shifts, or between projects. Develop procedures, reports, log sheets, and checklists.

NAES Safe

Safety is a core value of NAES and as a condition of employment, all employees are expected to be mentally alert and work safely at all times.  Additionally, employees are required to adhere to all safety warnings and posted safety signs whenever on company property.  Furthermore, employees must follow all NAES safety rules and procedures.  Effectiveness in carrying out this responsibility is part of the evaluation of each employee’s performance.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the O&M Manager and cooperates with all plant personnel relative to the operation and maintenance of the facility.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and the ability to lift/push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).

Working surfaces and terrain are varied: tile, concrete, stone/rock, grating, soil, and grass ground coverings.  Access to areas include: uneven surfaces, ladders, platforms, and while utilizing site procedures entry into areas with limited or confined access.

Visual acuity enough to distinguish differences between colored wires, wiring diagrams, color-coded mechanisms, or schematics necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the plant .Outside working conditions may require exposure to both cold and hot weather conditions for extended periods.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Work Schedule

The work schedule consists of a rotating (night/day) shift.  Shifts are typically 12 hours and include weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for continuous operations and maintenance needs.

Compensation

Starting compensation range is $35.00 to $45.00 per hour depending on skills and experience.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Two-year degree/diploma plus three years' work experience in a related field preferred Experience with electric generating equipment and operations, to include the repair and maintenance of turbine generators, is desired. Five years' work experience as a technician with increasing responsibility in a related industry may be substituted for this requirement.  Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion turbine operations, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable Experience with industrial chillers and aero derivative turbines are a plus A proficient knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation or controls is necessary for successful performance on the job Good oral and written communication skills are necessary as well as some familiarity with computer-based productivity tools relevant to the plant, e.g., Microsoft software products, databases for work orders (CMMS), maintenance logs, and procurement systems, etc. Ability to work well with others and be self-directed, as well as apply creative solutions to unique instrumentation, electrical and mechanical problems is desirable Valid driver's license required
