Job Details:

Purpose

The Ophthalmic Assistant delivers quality patient care with a professional and caring attitude, respects patient confidentiality, and performs all tests requested by physicians. This position is also responsible for educating patients on medical procedures and conditions, keeping patient records up to date, and acting as a liaison between the patient and healthcare personnel through effective communication. The OA must have good time management skills, a high energy level, flexibility, and a desire to learn

Responsibilities

Standard patient workup to include, but not exclusively: Obtain histories and review of systems, input and update medications, assessments of vision, IOP, extraocular muscle function, confrontational visual fields, pupil reactivity. Also, Lensometry, Amsler Grid, color plates, stereopsis, applanation tonometry, and stereopsis, auto and manifest refractions, dilation.

Ophthalmic testing to include: A/B Scan, fluorescein/indocyanine green angiography imaging, automated visual fields, OCT, fundus photography, and IOL Master, spectral microscopy, ERG, patient education, maintain records according to AMA guidelines.

Coordinate daily schedules, liaise with physician and staff, concierge desk, medication refills, patient calls, and other patient care related duties. Attend In-services and Ophthalmic Grand Rounds. Open and close exam lanes ensuring that all equipment is maintained and functioning properly, stocking and restocking exam rooms with necessary eye drops, consumables, and other medications used during eye exams, maintaining individual physician preference sheets, equipment such as lenses, and instruments. Assist physician with EMR entry as required, other duties as assigned including equipment cleaning, ability to translate and assist with in-office surgeries

Resolve pre-authorization, registration, or other referral-related issues prior to a patient's appointment. Contact patients verbally or via patient portal per current protocol. Uphold and complete referrals ensuring that the entire referral process is complete. Maintain updated referral resources. Provide response and assistance to patients via electronic multi-media requests (email, chat, web, etc.) in a collaborative and respectful manner. Obtains medical records as needed in accordance with UT Health Austin guidelines. Assist patient with scheduling appointments, review details and expectations about referrals with patients. Establish and maintain relationships with identified service providers.

Meet with patients and families regarding treatments, procedures, medications, and continuing care. Obtain prior authorizations for visits, procedures, imaging, and medications. Provide community resources and referrals for continuing care. Assist in locating funding for special procedures or other patient needs.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma and at least six (6) months ophthalmic clinical experience.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma and at least one (1) year of work experience in Ophthalmology (clinical program practicum experience preferred). Completion of the home study course for Joint Commission of Allied Health personnel in Ophthalmology. Certified as COA by JCAHPO.

Salary Range

$46,000+ depending on qualifications
