JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision of the ophthalmologist or optometrist, will provide scribe services to and for the physician(s). The Ophthalmic Scribe does not render medical care nor act independently. Demonstrates a commitment to professional accountability and growth to maintain and expand knowledge and skills. WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Works in a well-lit, ventilated, and heated and air conditioned area. May be exposed to unpleasant sights and sounds. Exposure and observation of eye procedures, eye exams, in office surgeries and laser treatments. Long periods of remaining in a stationary position as well as moving around the department are required. There are risks of exposure to disease and infection. Must be able to move or position 25 lbs. independently.
CONTACTS WITH OTHERS:
Patients, family members, and significant others, ophthalmologist and Associates, other health care providers, community personnel, insurance carriers, administrative staff and Medical Center support services.
EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
Strong communication skills. Excellent listening and note taking-skills. Basic understanding of medical and ophthalmologic terminology.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR EQUIVALENTS:
Education: High School graduate. 1-year certificate Scribe program or 2-year Associates Scribe Degree within 12 months prior to completing the Ophthalmic Scribe Certification examination is preferred. Coding, medical terminology experience/knowledge would be a plus.
Experience: Relevant work experience (one or more years) in the healthcare field (preferably ophthalmology/optometry) within a direct, patient care environment required.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR REGISTRATIONS:
Preferred 1-year certificate Scribe program or 2-year Associates Scribe Degree within 12 months prior to completing the Ophthalmic Scribe Certification examination.
