This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Ophthalmology duties: Performs, prescribes, and analyzes results for the treatment of illnesses, diseases, injuries, and conditions that are related to the eye. Tasks include vision assessments, eye surgeries and advanced forms of eye disease in patients with significant systemic illness. A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, and experience. This role will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. An entry-level role typically requiring little to no prior knowledge or experience and requiring vocational or technical education. Work is routine or follows standard procedures, is closely supervised, and communicates information that requires little explanation or interpretation.
Job Overview
This position works directly with physicians, patients and their families to provide a wide range of state-of-the-art imaging and clinical support for all Ophthalmic specialty clinics, including research, using highly specialized imaging equipment dedicated to the study and treatment of disorders of the eye.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification OR Obtain within three (3) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree.
2. Experience as an Ophthalmic Photographer or Ophthalmic Technician demonstrating proficiency in areas of ophthalmic photography.
3. Experience with DSLR imaging.
4. Experience with clinical trials
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Demonstrates proficient use of the following Level 1 imaging and clinic support: OCT/OCTA on the Zeiss, Optovue, and Heidelberg devices; Color fundus photography, fundus auto fluorescence, fluorescein angiogram, ICG on the Topcon, Claurs, Heidelberg devices; Haag Streit Slit Lamp Camera; Nidek Stereo Retinal Camera; Konan Endothelial Cell Count/Biomicroscopy; SLR Digital Camera Systems and Lighting; Keratograph Imaging; and Visual Fields, Topography, etc.
2. Functions as an Ophthalmic technician and performs preliminary workup of the patient exam including screenings and diagnostic testing as directed.
3. Demonstrates proficiency with or a learning-knowledge of some or all of the following Level 2 imaging for clinic needs: Electrophysiology tests on Roland and Veris systems compliant with ISCEV testing standards; Corneal imaging with the Heidelberg Rostock Confocal Scanner; RetCam with a handheld retinal camera.
4. Certifies and participates in current clinical trials for all ophthalmic specialties within one year of being hired.
5. Works directly with the reading centers to perform imaging and deliver data under specific guidelines mandated by the reading centers for certification.
6. Reviews reading center manuals and prepares cheat sheets.
7. Answers queries from reading center to address incorrect or missing data
8. Creates and supports graphic requests for physicians and staff. This includes retrieving images, editing images, preparing presentations, and overall education of equipment and software within the imaging department.
9. Provides projection services within the NEEC facility and assists with all audiovisual needs.
10. Works off site at NEEC satellite offices as an imager and technician.
Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to physically assist patients from wheelchairs into exam chairs and escort patients to other floors as needed.
2. Ability to assist the elderly and visually impaired patients.
3. Requires prolonged standing, walking, some bending, stooping, stretching and moving heavy machinery.
Skills & Abilities:
1. Knowledge of basic eye diseases and demonstrates an understanding of how best to photograph each disease differently.
2. Ability to work independently in all areas and provide smooth patient flow.
3. Understanding of various programs and files, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and digital enhancement.
4. Excellent communication skills for effectively explaining the exam process to patients and attempting to allay their concerns and apprehensions.
5. High attention to detail.
6. Ability to work in a high-volume clinic and fast paced environment.
7. Understanding and demonstration of sterile technique.
8. Ability to troubleshoot problems with photography equipment.
