Optical Coating Engineer

Job Summary: The coating engineer will be responsible for supporting the vacuum thin film coating manufacturing of both catalog and specialty optical components and includes interacting with other engineers and manufacturing staff. You Will: + Support the manufacturing of PVD thin film coatings. + Assist R&D programs by transferring coating design concepts to manufacturing. + Provide technical support to Operations on proper substrate handling, cleaning techniques, coating materials, coating designs and continuous improvement of manufacturing methods + Assist manufacturing staff in the operation and utilization of metrology instruments for thin film characterization + Identifying and diagnosing issues on the production floor, as well as collecting and preparing supporting data, especially with regards to coating equipment and processes + Design optical coatings to meet customer and internal specifications + Develop new optical coatings for all global manufacturing sites + Stay up to date with coating technology capabilities and limitations + Propose investment in new coating technologies, by defining specification needed to enable new coating designs + Guide coating designers around the globe to raise the know-how in the organization + Collaborate with R&D and manufacturing to ensure successful implementation of coating designs + Train new coating designers on advanced coating topics + Develop IP around coating design and technology to strengthen EO’s market position + Serve as the subject matter expert on projects when needed + Interface directly with select customers on relevant projects + Provide management with technical tradeoffs and risks pertaining to project work as well as general engineering efforts such that management may make informed decisions. + Creates & develops coating designs for new products + Improves coating designs and processes for manufacturability, performance, and cost + Leads root cause analysis / corrective action activities for coating related processes + Serves as a subject matter expert for thin film coating processes + Supports/collaborates with Optical Design Engineers and Sales Department + Interact with customers in development of new products + Leads the transfer of optical coating processes and technology from development to production + Stay well-versed in coating equipment, pumps, evaporation sources, ion sources, crystal monitors, and PVD basics + Train technicians on the execution of optical coating processes + Monitor and drive continuous improvement of manufacturing processes + Identify and solve quality issues + Create or change processes to improve quality + Support troubleshooting of existing optical coating equipment and processes + Perform other duties as assigned You Have: + Bachelor of Science in Optical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or alternatively a Bachelor of Science in Physics. + 5+ years of optical thin film coating experience in a manufacturing environment. + Extensive experience (5 years minimum) in Thin Film coating design using PVD, IAD, E-Beam, PECVD and optical chamber systems. + Proficiency in optical thin film deposition, optical monitoring, high vacuum technology, optical measurements, process controls and management. + Familiarity with most optical coating materials and their domain of application. + Familiar with optical testing such as spectrophotometry, stress measurements, environmental testing and laser damage. + Excellent computer skills – Email, MS Word, MS Excel, ERP system + Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings and engineering specs You Are: + Results-Oriented: Motivated, hard-working and ready to level-up; + Curious: You never stop learning and have an insatiable desire to gain new skills and knowledge; + Process Oriented: Well organized, demonstrating attention to detail; + Analytical: Possess a “If there’s a problem, I’ll find a solution” attitude; + Accountable: Demanding the highest quality from yourself and team members; + Detail-Oriented: Have excellent time management and organizational skills; + A Team Player: Reliable, collaborative, flexible with a positive ‘get things done’ attitude; + A U.S. Person: Compliant with ITAR, EAR and other laws and regulations as defined: “U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents ("Green Card" holders), persons granted refugee status or asylum status in the United States, or temporary residents granted amnesty.” You Will Enjoy: + Growth: The opportunity to learn and advance your career; + Wealth: Competitive compensation package linked to your experience and performance, a 401(k) with company match; + Wellness: Health, dental, vision & life insurance; + Balance: 9 paid holidays, generous paid vacation and sick -time; + Flexibility: 4/10 work week that provides a three-day weekend; + Culture: an energetic, caring, fun, value-driven team.
