Role PurposeThe successful candidate would work in the Optical Physics and Systems development group of Corning Advanced Optics business. We work in dynamic, cross-functional teams and seek an experienced materials scientist with a passion for the development of and applications for optical materials including large single-crystal materials.
Key Responsibilities Develop fundamental understanding of single crystal growth processes and drive improvements to current processes to increase yield or quality of products. Engage across the business team – R,D,&E, production, commercial, sales- to troubleshoot and improve existing product lines Lead technical investigations into materials growth, properties, or application including experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and communicating results providing impact. Document knowledge in formal and informal reports Required Education and Experience PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Solid-state Chemistry, Physical Chemistry or other relevant field PhD required with 10+ years of experience Deep technical understanding of single crystal materials and their optical properties Practical experience in materials growth and characterization methods Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work independently and to interface with large teams, working across departmental/discipline boundaries30-50% domestic travel.
Desired Skills Practical experience in vertical Bridgman single crystal growth and growth of large crystals Working knowledge of optical materials, including glass and glass ceramics. Working knowledge of metrology related to the optical properties and characteristics of material

The range for this position is $126,817.00 - $174,374.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
The range for this position is $126,817.00 - $174,374.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
