The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Scope of Position

In this role as a summer engineering intern you will support the design, analysis, and manufacturing of world-class, high-precision opto-mechanical systems, as well as hyperspectral imaging systems. This is a dynamic position for an individual to work as part of Corning Advanced Optics’ Aerospace and Defense engineering team to develop custom precision opto-mechanical systems based on Keene’s world-class precision machining core competency.

 

Primary duties will involve working within optical metrology team to design, engineer & build opto-mechanical systems and hyperspectral imaging systems including development of testing approach and instrumentation

Social and networking opportunities Weekly tech talks Community involvement Requirements Pursuing a degree in Optics or related discipline with concentration in Optics or hyperspectral imaging Basic understanding of optical systems and optical metrology High level of technical curiosity and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in precision engineering and opto-mechanical product development. Strong written and oral communication skills. Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity. Desired Skills:

Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate metrology approach. Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization. (Production techs to Sr. Leadership) Experience with interferometry, MTF, and other optical metrology instruments Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers. Working knowledge of analysis tools such as MatLab or Excel.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
