The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Scope of Position

Description:

Summer engineering intern position to support the manufacturing and engineering of world-class, high-precision optical systems. This is a dynamic position for an individual to work as part of Corning Advanced Optics’ Division Engineering team in several areas, including construction of complex test benches and test fixtures; test and measurement of optical modules; data analysis; and documenting technical procedures.

•    Pursuing a degree in a STEM field, including optics, imaging science, and physics. 
•    Coursework in geometrical optics, physical optics & polarization, aberration theory and interferometry.
•    Strong laboratory skills preferred.  Familiarity with clean room protocol, lasers, electro-optics, and precision mechanics,
•    Working knowledge of data analysis tools such as MATLAB, Python, or Visual Basic programming in Excel; knowledge of optical modeling software (e.g., lens design, image analysis, interferometry) is preferred.
•    Good written and oral communication skills.
•    Strong organizational skills and detail oriented. 
•    Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later
•    Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
•    Be willing to work at the posted job location

 

Desired Skills:
•    Experience with optical design software (e.g. CODE V, Zemax, LightTools, etc.). 
•    Coursework in physical optics

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
