POSITION DESCRIPTION: THE OPTICIAN REPORTS DIRECTLY TO THE CLINIC MANAGER AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INTERPRETING PRESCRIPTIONS AND MAKING LENS ACCORDING TO THE PRESCRIPTION AND HANDLING THE DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS OF THE OPTICAL DEPARTMENT.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Interpreting Prescriptions and making the lens appropriately
*Know how to cut, grind, edge and finish lenses
*Assist clients to select frames that are appropriate for them and in the preferred style and color they want
*Use measuring devices to take client measurements including bridge and eye sizes, vertex distance, papillary distance, temple length, optical eye centers for sizes for eyeglasses
*Coordinate frames and eye measurements with the optical prescription
*Prepare work orders to the optical laboratory that relate to the grinding and mounting of lenses in the chosen frames
*Verify finished lens spectacles match the optical prescription and order placed
*Make adjustments to frame and lens position to fit a client’s facial structure; shape or reshape frames by heating, shaping or bending plastic and metal frames
*Use lensometers or lens analyzers to determine current lens prescriptions for clients
*Advise Clients on the correct procedures for wearing eyeglass and caring for the lens and frame
*Make recommendations for specific types lenses, lens coatings and frames according to the client’s needs
*Sell contacts lenses, spectacles, sunglasses, cleaning kits and other products related to the eyes
*Assist clients with insertion, removal and care of contact lenses
*Place orders and purchase frames and lenses for inventory
*Arrange and maintain optical merchandise displays
*Assist Manager with marketing for optical department
*Maintain records of client prescriptions, payments and work orders sent to laboratory
* Handle tracking inventory, recordings sales, submitting patient insurance information, book keeping and client records
*Perform and document repairs, calibration and testing on equipment
*Keep Optical Department clean and well organized
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
* Must be able to interpret eyeglasses and contacts prescription
*must be able to make lenses and determine what type would be best for patient
*must be knowledgeable in edging, mounting, and tinting and knowing the different types of lenses
*must be able to do glasses repairs
*must have exceptional people skills, ability to work with providers, patients and staff
*must provide excellent customer service and interact well with people
*must be familiar with health system policies and procedures
*must be detail oriented and able to multi-task
*must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
*must be self-motivated and able to take initiative without constant supervision

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Opticians License or Certification preferred
Knowledge of standard office equipment including computer systems and applications
Possess good grammatical and business communication skills
Two years Optical Experience preferred.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Certification, License or two years Optical Experience
Previous computer experience required
Must be able to read, write, understand written and verbal communications
Must have some insurance knowledge and sales experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Medical office environment. Multi-task oriented position including direct patient care may require sitting or standing for long periods. Some bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 lb. Must interact with providers, patients and other office personnel. Must possess socio-economic and cultural sensitivity. May involve contact with angry, upset or ill persons. Will involve potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids and other hazardous substances. Must have visual acuity and manual dexterity to assist with procedures, perform and interpret lab results, and interface with computer. Must have auditory acuity to handle phone calls and extensive patient interaction.
WORK SCHEDULE: This is an salary position with schedule to be determined by the clinic manager/director.
