The position is needed to support the new location for the USC Roski Eye Institute at the USC Village.

Job Summary:

Has responsibility including, but not limited to, selecting the most appropriate eyeglasses for patients as prescribed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Obtains eye measurements and determines how a patients occupation, lifestyle and facial features affect his or her eyewear needs to discusses with the patient and ensure the best final decisions are made. Assists with scheduling patients, determining eligibility with various insurance policies (including the in-house USC Roski Eye Institute vision plans). Assists team with various tasks at the clinic to ensure all needs of the day are met.

Job Accountabilities include:

Responsible for using precision equipment to measure various eye features, including corneal thickness and pupil distance.  Measure clients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring device.Prepare work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses.Verify that finished lenses are ground to specifications.  Provide counsel and suggestions on frame shapes, styles and colors, lenses and special lens coatings, such as anti-glare materials.  Responsible for grinding and tinting lenses, repairing glasses and fitting contacts.Ensure eyeglasses are properly fitted per the patient’s prescription, taking into account a person's facial features, occupation and habits to assist them in choosing the best eyeglass frames, lenses and lens coatings to fit their needs.Provide specifications, including prescription, material, style, color and size to ophthalmic laboratory technicians so that they may insert the lenses into the eyeglass frame.  Reshape the frames to fit the patient’s face as necessary. Fix and fit existing glasses and provide counsel to patients on the use and care of their glassesFit contact lenses, cosmetic shells and artificial eyes on patient.  Measure the size and shape of eye to select the proper lens size and material.  Instruct customers on how to insert, remove and care for contacts lenses. Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments.Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing simple bookkeeping.Preparing patients for examination by the doctor. (This includes but is not limited to, collecting visual acuities, auto-refraction, keratometry, confrontational testing along with other similar tests).Prepare and submit billing and needed paperwork.

Preferred Education: AA or BA/BS in Opticianary

Preferred Experience: 5 year experience.  

Preferred Field of Expertise: Degree in Opticianary.  State licensure and/or American Board of Optician (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) preferred.

Percentage of Time:  100%, 40 hours/week

The hourly rate range for this position is $22.67 – $27.44. Minimum Education: High school or equivalent Minimum Experience: 1 year in optician training or apprenticeship. Minimum Skills: One year of experience Preferred Education: Associate's degree in related field(s) Or Bachelor's degree in related field(s) Preferred Certifications: American Board of Optician (ABO) certification National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) certification Preferred Experience: 2 years
