OR Support Technician
**Job Description** **Location:** Chicago, IL **Hospital:** RUSH University Medical Center **Department:** Operating Room **Work Type:** Full Time (Total FTE between 0.9 and 1.0) **Shift:** **Shift 4** **Work Schedule:** 8 Hr (7:00:00 AM - 3:00:00 PM) **Summary:** Responsible for providing support services to Perioperative services personnel by fulfilling the duties listed below, including various projects as assigned by the Unit Director of the Operating Room. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. **Responsibilities:** 1. Pick up and deliver specimens obtained during the surgical procedure to the appropriate testing area using most expeditious and safe method as directed by nursing staff. 2. Communicate to circulating RN before removing specimen from room. Rounds assigned operating room throughout the day, checking all rooms. Immediately respond to all urgent section specimens (e.g. frozen specimens) delivery requests. Review information entered on laboratory requisitions attached circulating to specimens for completeness prior to their delivery to appropriate labs. 3. Notify RN in room if documentation is not complete. Obtain missing/incomplete/inaccurate information from nursing and surgical service as appropriate. 4. Pick up and deliver needed items as requested including medications from the pharmacy, satellites or blood center as needed in support of OR Transport Services. 5. Acquire supplies and equipment required to assist in the delivery of patient care as needed. 6. Order and restock supplies located in support tech work area. 7. Monitor blanket warmer in sterile core and OR rooms. 8. Notify dispatch supervisor if additional supplies are needed. 9. Restock warmer as needed to provide for patient warmth. 10. Assist in the maintenance of clutter-free operating rooms and corridors. 11. Remove all equipment which is blocking access to fire doors, electrical panels or air flow vents in all areas of the Operating Room. 12. Notify Schedule Board Coordinator (SBC) and/or Education/Quality Coordinator (EQC) if unable to complete task or if in need of additional guidance to resolve. 13. Assist the OR nursing staff in the set up and turnover of the operating rooms. Assist nursing in the retrieval of equipment and supplies. 14. Open supplies and instrumentation on the sterile field as requested and under the supervision of the OR staff. Prepares clean and soiled instrumentation for return to Sterile Processing. 15. Reviews case cart sheets and acquired needed supplies and trays. 16. Notify circulating RN of any missing items or stock outs if found. Returns unused sterile supply items to appropriate supply return areas in the OR. 17. Assist in the breakdown of the surgical table in collaboration with the OR staff. 18. Assists with patient positioning and transporting of patients as requested by the nursing staff. 19. Checks refrigerator/freezer temperatures and documents on appropriate log. 20. Notifies nursing management of any temperature discrepancies. 21. Notify Medical Center Engineering (MCE) and EQC when defrosting of refrigerators is needed. 22. Corrects all deficiencies in the environment to ensure safety of the area. 23. Responsible for the maintenance of storage areas for assigned services as well as the maintenance of assigned rooms at the completion of surgical procedures at the end of the schedule. 24. Docks all suction devices upon completion of case load in assigned rooms or on request of the nursing staff. Cleans inside of storage cabinets including damp dusting and rearranging of stock. 25. Removes all items from the top of the cabinets upon completion of the case load in the assigned rooms. Ensures all equipment is cleaned upon completion of case load and returned to their proper storage areas for assigned rooms. 26. Restocks nursing supplies as needed at the completion of the case load. 27. Cleans nursing desk drawers and removes all extraneous items. 28. Returns lead gowns to assigned spaces in assigned rooms. 29. Begins preparation for following days patients by ensuring all required items are available and in the room, including appropriate operating room tables, positioning devices, lead aprons and other standardized items as identified by the specialty staff. 30. Assists circulating RN during activation of the Major Blood Loss Protocol by manning the tube station. 31. Ensures blood is removed from the Operating Room blood kiosks following completion of surgical procedures in assigned rooms. 32. At the end of the assigned shift, will review blood remaining in the kiosks and return all blood no longer needed. **Other information:** **Required Job Qualifications:** • High School Diploma or GED. • Ability to read, write and communicate clearly. • Excellent interpersonal skills. • Customer service oriented. • Demonstrate competency for all required skills. • Ability to remain standing and mobile for an extended period of time. • Ability to use wireless phone and paging systems. • Ability to prioritize and multitask multiple demands. • Ability to check documents for errors and use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data. **Preferred Job Qualifications:** • Previous operating room experience. • Aptitude in medical terminology. • CNA Certification. **Physical Demands:** • Requires lifting or carrying objects 35-40lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs. • Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents. **Rush is an equal opportunity employer.
