Job Description:

An Oral Surgery Tech possesses the expertise to provide supportive anesthesia care in a safe and effective manner. They are knowledgeable in the perioperative and emergent care management of patients undergoing office-based outpatient anesthesia. Effectively communicate pertinent information to patients and their escorts, as well as members of the healthcare team.

Major Responsibilities:
1.    Works with the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to provide supportive anesthesia care in the outpatient dental office. 
2.    Prepares medications and IV for sedation/anesthesia as directed by the oral surgeon.
3.    Provides pre-op and post-op education to patients/families about sedation and procedures.
4.    Monitors and records patient's vital signs (HR, RR, BO, EtCO2) during the procedure.
5.    Responsible for airway management during sedation as directed by oral surgeon.
6.    Responsible for emergent care management during procedure, such as bleeding, patient coughing or other reaction under sedation as directed by oral surgeon.
7.    Assists oral surgeons with dental procedures for examination, diagnostic and treatment procedures.
8.    Assists with surgical procedures in operative suite.
9.    Provides appropriate infection control procedures, including decontamination/sterilization of instruments as indicated, environmental cleanup and preparation, medical history review. Maintains correct account of sharps, needles, and blades.
10.    Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies and proper equipment maintenance.
11.    Responsible for achieving and maintaining proficiency in the Dental Specialties competency assessment checklist.
12.    Assists and anticipates needs of surgeon by passing instrumentation, equipment and supplies accurately and quickly.
13.    Predicting the needs of the patient and surgeon and preparing necessary items for cases. Demonstrates working knowledge of instruments/equipment used in surgical procedures.
14.    Utilizes personal protective equipment.
15.    Assisting in the cleanup of the room between procedures. Making necessary preparations for subsequent procedures and for the next day procedures, including restocking, supplying and coordinating materials required for use on procedures.   
16.    Actively participates in “universal protocol” per GHS policy.
17.    Maintains proper handling of operative specimens for laboratory analysis/delivery to lab. 
18.    Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested to facilitate the smooth operation of department.
19.    Precepting newly employed Surgical Technologists.

20. Adheres to regular and predictable attendance.
21. Personally interacts, engages with and cares for patients.
22. Ensures patient safety.
23.    Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

Education and Learning:

REQUIRED

High School Diploma or equivalency

For those based in Minnesota, the following is required:

Dental Assistant or Dental Hygiene program completion OR high school diploma + current certification of MN LDA

DESIRED

Graduate of an approved dental assistant or dental hygiene program

Work Experience:
REQUIRED
No experience required.

DESIRED

2-3 years of equivalent work experience within a dental office, oral surgery or operating room setting or other healthcare background.

License and Certifications:

REQUIRED

For those based in Wisconsin, the following is required:

Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE) from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) within 24 months of hire date or Licensed Dental Assistant (LDA) Certification from Minnesota within 18 months of hire

Allied Sedation Certification from the Minnesota Board of Dentistry (ASC - MN) within 18 months

Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

For those based in Minnesota, the following is required:

Licensed Dental Assistant (LDA) Certification from Minnesota at time of hire

Allied Sedation Certification from the Minnesota Board of Dentistry (ASC - MN) within 18 months of hire date

Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
