Orbital Tube Welder II - 2nd Shift

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Facilities, and Security. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

Performs welding processes on aluminum, steel, and alloy parts and assemblies to required tolerances using welding metals and metal alloys and precision blending using hand tools to prepare metallic surfaces for welding and non-destructive evaluation. Determines layouts and welds parts and assemblies according to engineering drawings and specifications. Monitors and verifies quality in accordance with statistical processes or other control procedures. Joins metal parts to form a permanent bond. Welds metal components and parts using standard specialized equipment such as gas welders and gas torches and may also utilize friction stir welding (FSW) methods using solid-state joining. Uses electrical currents or friction to create heat and bond metals. Observes tests on welded surfaces to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications. Set up and operate large, motion-controlled machines to create friction stir welds on launch vehicles. Perform periodic maintenance on machines with complex pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems. Accurately use precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and torque wrenches.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Fabricate and install hydraulic, pneumatic and propellant tubingWork with engineers to review design concepts, provide feedback for ease of assembly, and support development testsReview, edit and follow work instructions for assembly tasksPlan and communicate assembly steps for complex mechanical installationsSafely work with hazardous systems, containing chemicals and/or high pressureBe able to hand fit and tack weld parts together with TIG welding as requiredWork with design engineers to help recommend tooling designs needed to fixture parts for weldingAbility to visually inspect welds and verify quality utilizing borescopes and other inspection methodsDevelop weld schedules for various systems and componentsSetup, operate, and maintain orbital tube welding equipmentCut and prepare all tubing and fittings used in welding operationMust be able to work overtime - if needed

Minimum Qualifications:

2+ years of orbital welding experienceProficiency in operating Orbital Welding systems (AMI, ACCAIR, Swagelok)Strong understanding of welding metallurgy, heat-affected zones, and gas purity requirementsOperate and program Orbital Tube Welding equipment3+ years of experience in aerospace or related fieldsExperience with AWS D17.1 and or similar fusion welding or orbital tube welding specifications.Ability to use standard mechanical tools, fabrication shop equipment (band saw, chop saw, grinders, drills, etc.)Capable of using precision tools to accurately measure tight tolerances (calipers, height gauge, scales, etc.)Maintain a clean and safe working environment, following all safety protocols and regulationsAbility to read and understand aerospace 2D/3D drawingsExperience with various thin wall alloys (316 SS, Inco 625, CRES 21-6-9, Monel, Titanium)Collaborate with engineers, technicians and quality to troubleshoot issues and optimize welding processesAbility to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.​

Must be physically able to:

Climb ladders and stairs, and work in small, restricted areasLift and carry 25 lbs.


Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with tube fabrication (bend, flare, fittings, etc.) and pressurized system safetyExperience measuring and inspecting tube assemblies using a vector measuring machineExperience operating heavy lifting equipment such as cranes and forklifts around flight critical hardwareKnowledge of drawing review, scheduling systems, work order systems, inventory and various issue tracking systemsWorking knowledge of a variety of tube/fluid applications including GN2, GHe, hydraulics and cryogenicsAbility to use of 3D CAD tools (CREO is preferred), and ability to read and interpret GD&T per ASME Y14.5M-1994 standardExperience cleaning tube systems to aerospace or medical standardsClean room experienceCertification from an orbital weld training programTube bending experience
