Ordnance Equipment Worker/Mechanic
Summary This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Applications will not be accepted through this flyer. Responsibilities You will determine the nature and extent of required repairs using previously developed inspection standards or with minimal supervision. You will perform initial tests, disassembles overhauls, modify, and reassemble various ordnance handling equipment, e.g. beams, dollies, loaders, handling fixtures, bomb carts, etc. You will identify (reject) material that does not conform to specifications, bringing items of questionable condition code to attention of supervisor, work leader or quality control personnel. You will utilize a variety of inspection, test, and measurement techniques on newly manufactured or assembled goods to determine conformance with established criteria in preparation for quality acceptance by others. You will utilize established specification (contracts, drawings, technical manuals, etc.) in the performance of maintenance and assembly operations. You will install, align and adjust steering mechanisms, shock mitigating systems, pivot arms mechanical linkages, tie-rods, mechanical and hydraulic brakes, gear trains and a variety of bearing types, and dolly rail assemblies. You will perform cleaning and finishing operations by spray or dip methods using mild chemicals and irrigating solutions followed by water rinse and mechanical methods such as grit blasting. You will routinely handle and utilize hazardous materials (solvents, lubricants, cleaners, corrosion preventative agents such as primers and paints in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and vendor safety data sheets. You will perform various machining operations such as cutting, drilling, sanding, tapping, grinding (hand and mechanical), and counter-boring. You will use a variety of hand power tools and precision measurement equipment to identify specific tolerances and reference points, and maintain dimensional accuracy. You will use fixtures, gauges, inside and outside micrometers, calipers, torque wrenches, dial indicators and test stands in overhaul, checking and testing of equipment to required specifications. You will perform repairs which are often complicated by critical tolerances and surfaces which require skilled workmanship in the machine and hand fishing and assembly of replacement parts. You will refurbish and repair ammunition and explosives shipping and storage containers per technical manuals. You will implement the application of equipment modifications in accordance with detailed instructions. You will perform other duties assigned, including operation of forklifts, pallet jackets, industrial wash systems, laser engraving tools, and automated identification technology tools in both industrial and warehouse environs. This announcement uses the Direct Hire STRL Mission Support authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. This position is located in the Energetics Manufacturing Department (M), Navy Weapons Division (M5), Weapons Maintenance Branch (M53) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division.
