Job Description

We are seeking an OSS Applications Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity in the Allen, TX.  There is an option to work partial remote; however, this role will eventually work onsite full time.  

The engineer for OSS applications is considered to be a prime admin and operator of all of the specific applications that are used by the OSS group. The engineer is expected to be on a 24/7 on call rotation along with the other members of the team as to ensure 5-9’s (99.999%) uptime for any and all applications that are owned by OSS. The engineer needs to be extremely knowledgeable about the inner workings of all the applications they are prime for as well as communicating that knowledge to the other team members of the applications group. They are expected to communicate closely with the development team as well as the server admins to ensure that applications are functional, usable, and reliable for use by the entire company. The engineer that will fill this roll will be expected to stay up to date on all vendor based version upgrades, patches, releases, and changes to the core applications that they administer as well as creating MOPs for rolling out any changes into the production systems.

 

Job Duties

Maintain and operate applications that are classified as an OSS application.Communicate issues to vendors for out of the box applications and form a functional plan on implementing fixes and troubleshooting the application.Fix and proactively recommend fixes to applications that are classified as an OSS application.Document and inventory the status quo of integrated applications including external system calls of applications.Become a subject matter expert (SME) on OSS applications.Write “how to” documentation for operating and administering OSS applications.Ensure that security requirements on all Unix / Linux servers are being adhered to.Communicate changes and recommendations to improve efficiency in applications and systems.Create MOPs and execute changes within a production Red Hat / Centos / Unix environment.Identify dependencies between applications and OS level packages as well as troubleshoot problems with those interconnections.Work with cross functional groups and organizations to develop tools and solutions from use cases and requirement documents.

Qualifications At least 1+ years of engineering experience working with development teams and system admin teams.At least 1+ years working in a large, geographically distributed server architecture.At least 1+ years of experience working with development teams for functional requirements on distributed server systems running internally developed applications.At least 1+ years of experience working for large telecommunications companies.At least 1+ years of networking experience with focus on server interconnections.Bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar field.Ability to travel within the United States.Ability to be on call in a 24/7 server environment. Experience in doing large scale software upgrades and versioning changes across multiple servers. Ability to communicate affectively across multiple large organizational structures (Verbal / Email / TXT).

Experience running applications for one or more of the following applications: Confluence, Globys, HPNA, Infinera, Remedy, Syslog, Apache, Tomcat, MRTG/Cacti, Oracle databases, SQL databases, Tibco, Mongo DB, Cassandra DB, Tibco, Rabbit, M6, Telco/Cable CPE provisioning software.

Additional Information

This contract-to-hire role can work remote during the contract portion with travel to either Seattle, WA or Allen, TX, but will eventually be located onsite in the Allen, TX area.
