Outpatient Specialty Pharmacy Technician

Founded in 1906, McLeod Health is a locally owned and managed, not for profit organization supported by the strength of more than 900 members on its medical staff and more than 2,900 licensed nurses. McLeod Health is also composed of approximately 15,000 team members and more than 90 physician practices throughout its 18-county service area. With seven hospitals, McLeod Health operates three Health and Fitness Centers, a Sports Medicine and Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, Hospice and Home Health Services. The system currently has 988 licensed beds, including Hospice and Behavioral Health. The hospitals within McLeod Health include: McLeod Regional Medical Center, McLeod Health Dillon, McLeod Health Loris, McLeod Health Seacoast, McLeod Health Cheraw, McLeod Health Clarendon and McLeod Behavioral Health.  

Essential Job Responsibilities/Expectations
1. Job responsibilities include those listed in competency document.
2. Maintains a professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, 
and co-workers in accordance with our Service Excellence Standards and Core Values.
3. Greets patients and assists in responding to their needs in the pharmacy.
4. Gather patient information and process prescriptions requested by the patient.
5. Exhausts all efforts to communicate with the patient any issue or delay in filling their prescriptions.
6. Notifies Pharmacist and contacts prescriber if appropriate in a timely manner when there is a concern about 
a prescription related to a drug interaction, allergy, drug disease state interaction, and other circumstances 
as indicated.
7. Responsible for investigating and resolving third-party payment issues.
8. Serves patients with a professional, caring demeanor for quality patient experience.
9. Responsible for maintaining proper records and documents as required by state and federal laws.
10. Prioritizes and fills prescriptions based on specifics such as waiters, discharges, hospice, specialty, etc. to 
ensure the patients are receiving excellent care and service.
11. Works together with Pharmacists, other technicians, and all related health care members to help assist 
patients with dropping off or picking up prescriptions including ringing them up at the cash register
12. Works together to ensure all supplies including but not limited to vials, caps, bottles, labels, paper, toners, 
oral syringes, unit dose cards, bags are adequately stocked each day and inventory is maintained for use.
13. Answer phones, load prescription bags into will call system, file prescription hard copies, fill bottles and 
affix appropriate labels for verification by Pharmacist.
14. Maintain and refill robot daily.
15. Assists Pharmacist in daily operations of the outpatient and specialty pharmacy.
16. Establish collaborative professional relationships with other healthcare professionals involved in the care of 
patients.
17. Works collaboratively with physician offices to obtain specialty prescriptions.
18. Initiates prior authorization in Cover My Meds if needed, and monitors until approved.
19. Researches to find copay assistance if needed and assists in getting patients enrolled.
20. Maintains spreadsheet for reporting financial impact and care management.
21. Assists Pharmacist in Medication Therapy Management cases assigned to our pharmacy.
22. Verify confirmation of delivery: tracking mail order packages and pick up status.
23. Maintains340B eligibility spreadsheet
24. Calls specialty patients to set up refills and shipments.
25. Orders specialty medications.


Job Requirements
Qualifications/Training:
• Ability to work independently
• Competent in Excel or equivalent computer program for creating and maintaining 
spreadsheets/financials 
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations/Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
• Maintain a current state certification with the South Carolina State Board of Pharmacy
