Position Summary

The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing outreach activities to engage with educational institutions, community members and key stakeholders. This role involves educating our target audiences, gathering feedback, and building relationships to foster awareness and support for the USGS EROS Center’s mission. This position plans and coordinates activities, presentations and events for students (6-12th grade + higher ed.), community members, and visitors of the EROS Center and provides public tours daily or as necessary.

Duties and responsibilities

Community Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with local community leaders, educational institutions, and other groups to educate the public on the value of the work performed at EROS.Create and deliver in-class presentations and hands-on activities about EROS Center and its earth science projects to schools and other community groups across the regionCoordinate presentations and Q&A sessions and speakers for select onsite visiting groupsCoordinate job shadowing/mentoring opportunities for high school and college students working with EROS scientists and projectsProvide daily tours of the EROS Center as regularly scheduled and upon requestResponsible for the quality of the “visitor experience” while at EROSEvent Support and Coordination: Support and enhance EROS’ outreach presence for community events and regional and national workshops, conferences, trade shows, etc. to promote the value of EROS’ science projects and support USGS STEM initiativesCreate and constantly innovate new outreach activities to serve 6-12th grade and all secondary education studentsPrepare and distribute outreach materials for events or as requested for collaboratorsTravel to local, regional and national events as requestedSupport internal departments with hosting special eventsCommunication: Serve as a primary point of contact for inquiries and communications related to outreach activities.Coordinate group visits and tours of the EROS Center with members of the publicWork with internal staff to coordinate tours and arrange for speaking engagementsKeep outreach and educational webpages up to dateCommunicate with the public, smaller groups & occasionally large groupsCollaboration: Work with internal teams to align outreach efforts with overall EROS Center Communications & Outreach goalsWorking with our scientists, create presentations to share the value of EROS science projectsWork with other teams at EROS to ensure all required paperwork and processes are completeWork with team members to support monthly and annual reporting needsPerform other duties as assigned

                                                                              

Qualifications

*** Must have Three years of continuous residency in the U.S. ***

Education: 

Associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field from a college/university (Teaching, Public Relations, Communications)

Experience: 

2-3 years proven experience in outreach, community engagement, or public relations.Strong written and verbal and presentation skills.Ability to organize and manage events and activities.Ability to work independently and in a team.Interest in physical sciences or remote sensing a plus

Computer Skills

Ability to operate a personal computer & have a high comfort level with the Microsoft suite of products

Working conditions

A majority of the work is performed in the Center.  Outreach activities do require off-site assignments, including overnight travel (in some cases) at sites across the region and nation.

Physical requirements

The requirements of a normal office environment are applicable to this position most of the time.

Ability to lift 50 lbs. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Three years of continuous residency in the U.S. for issuance of a Government Security credentialThe candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for government facility access and user account

Experience and/or Education in lieu of these qualifications will be reviewed for applicability to meet these requirements.
