As an Outside Plant Construction Mechanic, you will be responsible for the overall condition of the TDS Internal Construction team assets, including vehicles, excavation equipment, trailers and small engines.  In this position, you will be a highly skilled individual with the ability to diagnose and repair issues relating to both gas and diesel engines as well as hydraulic systems. You will perform preventative maintenance, emergency repair, and inspection activities of all Internal Construction assets including directional drills, hydrovac trailers, trencher/plow, mini excavators, and vehicles of various sizes.

 

This position is eligible for a $3,000 sign-on bonus! (Payout terms apply)

 

Training

As an Outside Plant Construction Mechanic, you will have the opportunity to obtain a Class A CDL through our in-house training program. You will attend safety training at one of our new facilities where you will also be trained on Pole Climbing and Bucket Trucks. On-the-job training includes exposure to various construction equipment including Directional Drill Rigs, Mini Excavators, Trenchers, and Locators. Fiber optic training includes Fusion Splicing, Fault Detection, and exposure to OTDRs and other advanced testing equipment.

 

The duration of training varies based on the team assignment. Training for underground teams is 3 weeks, with an additional 1 week required for aerial training. Depending on factors such as market needs, prior skills, and team size, some individuals may only complete underground training, while others may undergo the full 4-week program, including aerial training.

Responsibilities

Perform all scheduled maintenance, faulty component, and emergency repairs on construction equipment, vehicles, trailers, and small engines.

Perform monthly vehicle and construction equipment inspections, recommending and completing maintenance repairs required.Respond to equipment and vehicle issues in the field as needed to facilitate repairs.Perform emergency repairs on construction equipment, vehicles, trailers, and small engines.Identify and replace any faulty components.Utilize diagnostic hardware, software, and repair manuals required to read error codes and identify repairs required.Utilize hand tools, pneumatic tools, electrical testers, and welders to ensure proper maintenance repairs are completed in line with manufacturer standards and recommendations.Work with 3rd party vendors as needed if repairs are outside technical knowledge or require manufacturer intervention.Order parts from vendors with the intent of same-day repair, where possible.

Track and document all equipment maintenance and repairs. 

Keep detailed maintenance and repair records for each piece of equipment, including associated costs.Utilize laptop or tablet to document the date work was performed, maintenance completed, and next scheduled maintenance activity.

Develop and manage maintenance schedules.

Develop a routine preventative maintenance schedule for all assets, ensuring all maintenance is completed on schedule and in compliance with manufacturer recommendations.Work with outside plant construction leadership and Senior OSP Construction Technicians to schedule preventative maintenance, minimizing downtime during peak production times and hours.Communicate with Senior OSP Construction Technicians to ensure timely resolution of repairs.Manage monthly workload while coordinating with OSP Construction Associate Managers and Senior OSP Construction Technicians.Mentor construction team members on field inspections to help prevent unnecessary repairs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Technical certification (or higher) -OR- 6+ months of professional work experience -OR- current military service or prior military service with honorable discharge.3+ years of experience troubleshooting, repairing, and servicing heavy equipment with a proficiency in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines to meet TDS’s business needs including but not limited to our obligations to our customers and to our customers’ needs.

Other Qualifications

Must have the ability to obtain a Class A CDL. A current CDL is preferred at hire, but TDS will train and certify eligible associates through its in-house CDL certification program after hire.Certification in Diesel and Gasoline engine repair preferredComputer experience including Excel and Word as well as use of diagnostic software.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Ability to work independently.May require occasional travel.Must be willing to work overtime as needed. May be required to work various/swing shift as a business need dictates.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to sit, stand, write, and operate a computer keyboard, standard office equipment and telephone. The associate regularly communicates with customers. The associate is frequently required to move about and reach for items. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be required to balance or climb. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

This position may require working outdoors, in mechanical/ equipment rooms, and possible extreme weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
