Overnight Relief Counselor

JOB DESCRIPTION

When called in, the Overnight Relief Counselor is responsible for providing overnight care and supervision for individuals experiencing mental health crises in a residential setting. This position involves maintaining a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment for clients during overnight hours. The role includes direct client engagement, crisis intervention, medication assistance, documentation, and light administrative and housekeeping tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: High school diploma or GED. The ideal candidate will possess strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team and accept supervision. They should be capable of maintaining appropriate boundaries while engaging in close interpersonal relationships and be able to learn and apply principles of social rehabilitation. Additionally, the candidate should be responsible, flexible, empathetic, and skilled at relating to clients, staff, professionals, and community members.

 

Driver's license for at least two years and driving record acceptable to the insurance carrier.

 

Valid California driver's license; auto in safe operating condition; auto liability insurance; good driving record; criminal record clearance; proof of authorization to work in the United States as required by the Immigration and Reform Act of 1986. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

Preferred: One (1) year of related experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Stay awake during shift hours to provide care and supervision of residents, responding appropriately to any crisis situations. Identify, assess, and respond to crisis situations. Set clear limits and ensure the safety of both residents and the facility. Provide informal, supportive counseling and guidance to residents during overnight hours by listening attentively, responding empathetically, and assisting with problem-solving to address any concerns or challenges that may arise. Conduct regular scheduled nightly rounds to ensure clients' well-being and safety in accordance with program best practices and regulatory guidelines. Promptly log and report any concerns or incidents related to clients or program operations. Accurately document interactions and relevant details in staff logs and residents' electronic health records (EHR). Assist residents with self-administration of medications. Maintain and update a daily log of resident medication records, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Update residents' Medication Administration Records (MAR) on a weekly basis, ensuring all medication information is current. Inventory residents’ medications and follow up on medication refills. Perform daily household duties and assist with resident meals when necessary. Perform administrative duties as necessary. Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to operate a motor vehicle; climb stairs; possess good communication skills; meet the requirements of the classification; and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed. Capable of the following extended activities: walking, standing, sitting, bending, climbing stairs. Able to intermittently lift up to 35 pounds and bend/kneel/stoop infrequently for office duties and /or support clients' physical mobilities.
