Job Description

This Packaging Engineer, reporting to the Director of Indirect Strategic Sourcing, will be focused on optimizing current packaging products with a focus on cost-effectiveness, process efficiency and sustainability within Zurn Elkay Water Systems.  They will align VOC (voice of customer) in terms of product expectations, pain points, and opportunities with requirements/standards to optimize operational safety, quality, and costs in collaboration with manufacturing sites, engineering, quality, supply chain, logistics, and external suppliers.

This position is located in Milwaukee, WI or Downers Grove, IL.

Key Accountabilities

Lead change management projects to achieve timely completion in alignment with internal and supplier deadlines.

Ensure packaging delivers a positive consumer experience while adhering to cost, quality, and compliance standards.

Consult with Marketing, Engineering, Purchasing, Product Development and Operations Departments to identify strategic projects and deployment priorities on cost saving initiatives.

Develop and update packaging specifications as required including 2D CAD drawings and 3D renderings.

Collaborate with third-party partners to develop enhanced packaging solutions and implement automated packaging technologies. 

Manage technical service providers related to test, analysis, and validation of determined packaging materials based on durability, sustainability, cost, and compliance.

Proactively assesses internal and external process improvements through CI initiatives, best-practice identification and sharing between manufacturing sites, and technology upgrades to influences effective change and drive innovation and continuous improvements.

Work with the global sustainability team to drive U.S. projects aimed at enhancing packaging sustainability, while identifying new materials and processes to achieve company objectives.

Analyzes market and delivery conditions to determine present and future (industry trends in pricing and availability that will impact the business) material availability, and prepares market analysis reports.

Responsible for timely reporting to agreed upon KPI’s and presenting project plans, activities and progress

Qualifications/Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Packaging or Mechanical Engineering, or related field

5+ years experience in Packaging engineering

Able to act and make independent decisions as well as work effectively in a team environment.

Ability to dissect and determine root causes of problems and implement solutions.

Collaborative and effective in a cross-functional environment.

Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment while meeting multiple deadlines for leadership.

Continuous improvement mindset, including the ability to innovate and simplify legacy processes.

Knowledge of ERP systems / Microsoft D365 a plus

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of leadership and with external providers
