Packaging Engineer
Description: The team is looking for a Packaging Engineer for the customer care and aftersales facility. This facility is a flow through facility that supports the dealerships and service centers (AutoZone, bell tire, GM dealerships, etc.) from a parts perspective for any fixes on the vehicles after the vehicle has been purchased by the consumer. This is a small part, high volume facility meaning they package and palletize thousands of parts to be shipped across the country per day. Typical parts include small part-kits (nuts, bolts, screws), Panels, headlamps, fuel pumps, wheels (low volume of wheels), etc. This individual will be responsible for the design, implementation, and quality resolution regarding the packaging of these small parts using corrugated packaging. This facility does also ship large freight containers for international shipments, but the team generally does not deal with this side of the business, they may help out with a quality issue but that’s about it. The Packaging Optimization team performs daily activities supporting the flawless launch and distribution of parts going to the Customer Care & Aftersales (CCA) Original Equipment and Independent Aftermarket network. Customer satisfaction, quality compliance, and sustainability represent core focus areas that serve as our compass, as we establish and achieve world-class KPIs and SLAs. This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis. The Packaging Engineer designs, tests, and implements packaging designs that are an integral part of the Automotive Aftermarket Product Development process, keeping material cost, densification, sustainability, throughput, and damage reduction in mind to name a few critical considerations. Further, he or she reviews and improves existing packaging designs. This engineer gets about 50 new release part numbers a week to set up with packaging specs Daily job is to manage that influx of new parts The plant typically has 1-2 issues a day where there is a fit issue, or issue with supplier inbound delivery that the engineer would be responsible for. In addition to that, participating in supplier meetings, hosting in quality type function calls where they may be quality issues The Majority of the parts are packaged to a material specification, that the team will load into the system & all the employees will follow that "recipe" on how to package every part number. The Engineer is setting up procedure on how to package or put in order numbers so all hourly operators will follow until a new problem arises. Materials: expendable corrugate, Foam, bubble wrap (two options for protection) Handles the complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing Fixes new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials, processes and provides creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications of product to resolve physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging Establishes standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluates and selects packaging suppliers / vendors; periodically conducts vendor reviews Handles multiple projects simultaneously Works closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing Participates in product introduction teams to deliver new products to market + Shift: 2nd shift + 3:30pm-12:30am, 1:30am at the latest (there is daily PAID overtime). + If the plant is in production this person will be expected to work, Saturday and Sundays are expected as well on a rotational basis. + Ability to move to first shift as time progresses.
