Job Description

Summary

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for the detailed design and formal testing activities of Accuray’s custom packaging solutions. This role is critical to ensuring parts quality is maintained after shipment of the many sensitive components used on our radiation therapy platforms. This individual will work closely with stakeholders in supply chain, R&D, quality, manufacturing and service, providing packaging domain expertise and best practices on new product introduction and continuous improvement efforts. This individual will also coordinate with external design partners and testing facilities as needed to ensure all internal requirements and business objectives are met in a timely and effective manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Packaging Design:

Researches, analyzes and plans the component packaging strategy for new product releases in accordance with product requirements as established from various sources including manufacturing, reliably, and customer service.

Designs and develops custom packaging solutions including ownership of the detailed mechanical design, component documentation and definition of any associated functional requirements.

Selects, in conjunction with Purchasing and Regulatory, Quality and Compliance, packaging design partners and suppliers.  Selection process may include site visits, review of questionnaires and quality documents, interviews and assessment of product quality.

Documents, implements and thoroughly tests packaging designs for release to production. Testing responsibilities may include designing of test fixtures and coordination of environmental testing (thermal, vibration, etc).

Manages external vendor communications and task execution for any outsourced design or testing activities.

Supports transfer of relevant design output documents and recommended process instruction to customers in other departments.

Identifies and supports continuous improvement efforts for existing packaging designs, leveraging best practices and domain expertise.

Safety and Quality:

Ensure safety and quality considerations and requirements are pro-actively addressed and implemented in any owned designs.

Address and manage in a timely fashion safety and quality issues raised by customers or staff.

Supports Accuray’s Quality System and Safety and Health Program by following procedures and mentoring others.

Contribute to the development or improvement of company processes.

Qualifications

a. Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Packaging, Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.

2 years experience working for electro-mechanical device manufacturers with packaging design authority. Medical device industry experience preferred.

Understanding of FEA concepts and application as it relates to design robustness.

Hands-on experience with standard shop fabrication equipment (lathes, sheet metal machining centers, etc.).

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Good computer skills, including the use of standard office software programs including spreadsheet, word processing and email applications.

Comfortable with using 3D CAD modeling and 2D drawing software. SolidWorks experience preferred.

DFMEA or other formal product reliability qualification and testing experience.

Self-directed individual who is able to move tasks forward with minimal supervision.
