Job Title: Mechanical Engineer II (Packaging Engineer)
Location: North Reading, MA, US (Fully Onsite)
Duration: 11 Months (Extension & Conversion Possible)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7 AM–3 PM or 8 AM–4 PM
Pay Rate: $49/hr.
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Packaging Engineer with a strong background in industrial packaging design to join our Process Engineering Pkg team. This role will focus on developing, improving, and commercializing component packaging for New Product Introduction (NPI) projects while also supporting existing production-level packaging systems. The ideal candidate will take ownership of root cause analysis and countermeasure implementation for field quality defects related to packaging. This role reports directly to the Lead Packaging Engineer.
Top 3 Must-Have Hard Skills:
• Industrial Packaging Design Background – Experience in designing packaging solutions for industrial components.
• Knowledge of Packaging Materials – Understanding of different materials and their impact on product safety and efficiency.
• Knowledge of Transportation Systems – Familiarity with logistics, packaging performance testing (ISTA standards), and trailer loading configurations.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop packaging concepts in collaboration with vendors and suppliers.
• Conduct packaging performance testing, qualifications, and validations per ISTA standards.
• Analyze engineering drawings and product specifications to design suitable packaging solutions.
• Prepare sketches, specifications, samples, and written analyses for design approval from cross-functional teams.
• Optimize trailer loading configurations to improve efficiency in logistics.
• Maintain packaging part numbers in the PLM system and manage the Supplier Packaging database.
• Collect Packaging Data Sheets (PDS) from part suppliers.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or industrial engineering with a strong packaging background.
• 3-5+ years of relevant experience in packaging engineering.
• Expertise in packaging base materials and systems.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for packaging design.
• Ability to write, review, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Skills:
• Knowledge of transportation and logistics principles. Experience with palletizing and trailer loading software (e.g., TOPS, CAPE, Easy Cargo).
• Familiarity with Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methods and sustainability impact software (e.g., Compass by Trayak).
• Understanding of ISTA and ASTM industry test standards.
