What You'll Do

Role:

The Nuclear Safety Senior Director is responsible for providing overall strategy and technical guidance for nuclear safety.  Nuclear safety encompasses the requirements emanating from 10CFR830 and include nuclear facility safety and nuclear criticality safety. In this role, the Senior Director will be the primary spokesperson to the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board and other external entities on these matters.

 

Responsibility:

The Senior Director of Nuclear Safety is responsible for defining technical strategy for nuclear safety at Pantex. In this role, the candidate will approve Safety Strategy documents for Major Modifications or other significant programs, oversee the technical strategy for development of safety basis documents for both plants, identify needed improvement actions and prepare requests for funding to execute, and own the technical direction, for implementing procedures and training. The role also represents a key escalation point in resolution of disagreement between CNS and the safety document approving authority team.

 

Accountabilities:

To the Vice President of Mission Engineering for the overall technical quality of nuclear safety deliverables and technical

basis, adequacy of technical direction, qualification requirements for nuclear safety personnel, and interfaces with NNSA. To the Senior Directors of Mission Engineering at Pantex for the overall technical quality of nuclear safety deliverables and technical basis, adequacy of technical direction, and interfaces with NNSA.  To the Pantex organization to successfully execute all duties in support of Pantex nuclear safety.

 

Authorities:

Authorized to define technical direction for nuclear safety issues. Negotiate with NNSA on CNS's behalf on nuclear safety issues.

Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college. Minimum 15 years of relevant and progressive experience in nuclear safety and nuclear criticality safety. Minimum 9 years of leadership experience. Experience and knowledge of disciplined operations and the implementation and flow down of nuclear safety requirements in floor level application. Broad contacts, experience, and credibility within the industry. Previous leadership experience a must with demonstrated results.

 

In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE o 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science and 4 years nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements

Masters of Engineering degree in engineering discipline. Experience in the application of Department of Energy Orders and Standards relevant to nuclear safety. Experience with DOE/NNSSA and industry groups related to nuclear safety.

Knowledge of approaches to nuclear safety challenges at other DOE sites.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
