Job Summary
Provides basic and advanced life support and emergency pre-hospital care to persons in emergency situations.
Essential Job Functions
· Provides ALS or BLS patient care in accordance with the approved standing orders and protocols, department policies and on-line medical command. Is constantly mindful of the treatment modality that will be most appropriate for the patient's illness or injury.
· Acts as a patient advocate and practices good communication techniques to keep the patent and family informed regarding their care provision.
· Completes the appropriate ALS (Paramedic) or BLS (EMT) skills lab, CPR and continuing education credits as required to maintain medical command and/or certification. Completes all required hospital and departmental education and competencies in a timely manner.
· Operates department vehicles in a safe and lawful manner. Reports to supervisor all traffic violations and other infractions (both on and off the job). Maintains an accident-free record (on the job) during the evaluation period.
· Responds without delay to emergencies or in a timely manner to calls for assistance or transportation. Coordinates responses with EMS staff, hospital staff, patients and family, and outside agencies so that transportation and care are provided appropriately.
· Documents patient care on the ambulance trip sheet accurately and legibly in accordance with State and department policies. Collects and legibly documents all required paperwork such as information for patient billing or other record keeping purposes.
· Inspects assigned vehicle and equipment along with performing other station duties in a timely manner to insure that equipment and supplies are available and in working order so that proper patient care can be delivered. Reports missing or broken equipment to a supervisor as soon as possible.
· Washes and disinfects medical equipment and emergency medical vehicles in accordance with appropriate standards.
· Arranges the scheduling of ambulances and vans in a timely manner as requested and necessary.
· Reports and documents any concerns, issues or events which are undesired or which have the potential to escalate.
· Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
· High School Diploma, GED or higher level of education.
· Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
· Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
Preferred Qualifications
· One (1) to two (2) years ambulance service experience
· Phlebotomy and/or EKG
· Computer Skills
· BTLS or PHTLS.
· NIMS course completion.
License, Certification & Clearances
· Certified by the PA Department of Health as an EMT-Paramedic.
· Must receive and maintain authorization for medical command from the ambulance service medical director.
· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program required.
· Act 33 with renewal.
· Act 34 with renewal.
· Act 173 FBI Clearance with renewal.
· Current AHA for the Professional Rescuer. Completion of Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) (PA Recognized)
· Current ACLS
· Current PALS
· Current CPI training
· Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License (if out of state hire current Department of Motor Vehicle record report required and obtain PA Current Driver License within 30 days of hire).
Supervisory Responsibilities
· This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
· Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
· Travel may be expected locally between Independence Health locations.
